I don't know if there was some other sceners last week at Intel Dev Forum in SF... I had the chance to test for a good 40 min the SteamVR stuff (HTC Vive VR headset, basestations, controller and audio headset). I did not have huge expectations, my (old) VR experience were just... bah. And I thought it would be like 3D TVs, fun for 10 minutes then headache :)
And... Wow, I got slapped like never since FR-041 Debris !!!
That's crazy and impossible to show or describe, need to be tested. If I understood well, SteamVR is the only one where all your body is taken into account (thru laser base stations which defines a real playable area up to a basketball field), so when you walk, jump or whatever, you move also in the virtual world. Funnily, the welcome hall is similar to the Matrix scene where Neo arrive for training, a white space where stuff appear. So cool.
I tested multiple demos: inflating and pushing ballons to get used of the movements, then you're under the sea on a sunk boat and nothing to do else than playing with fishes, mantas and suddenly a HUGE whale comes... pure demo style.
Then a useless kitchen game I won't describe, followed by a 3D painting room, in thge dark you draw stuff around you with multiple pencils, colors... and you can move within your art :)
And finally the Aperture Science VR Demo, you now, that's Portal 2 but.... you are really in the game !!!!
So sorry for this long speech but wow.... I think I saw the future and thinking of demos, it will be perfect, just think to be IN Debris and move in the collapsing city....
To finish, if you got the chance to test it, just do it, I'm addicted ! And after 40 minutes, no headache, no eye issues, worked perfectly with my glasses.
I'm ready for the Matrix...

Since these 3D goggles still dont escape the binocular feeling, they arent attractive to me. It becomes attractive once it covers the whole field of view of the human eye. Right now its still a very limited technology.
Support of demos for 3D TVs or monitors does make much more sense. And if a demo party would feature are 3D projector for 3D glasses (shutter, filter), these demos could be watched in the usual compo environment.

As far as I felt, those ones (looks like oculus and others are different) cover the whole field, my vision looked unlimited as in real life.... not like a 3D TV.

So, you are in a real big environment where you can walk without bashing into anything? And I was wondering how they solved the motion sickness as they claimed. Because for me, the motion sickness is not much a matter of latency but the single fact that you are convinced that you are moving in a space while in reality you are just sitting. Your brain says wtf. But yeah, if they have a big area where you move your physical body and it registers then it solves the motion sickness. Good luck putting that in your home though.

As much as I really like VR (and I've tried them all from CAVE, DK2 or even 360deg. planetariums lol), we cannot ignore the facts, unless you want to be in a day-dreaming wishful thinking group or you want to take advantage of the hype (i.e. financially).
And the fact is - nobody solved how to do VR so far.
As we know the eye has two mechanism that stimulates depth cues: accommodation and vergence. The problem is that accommodation is not working that well with current VR solutions - even worse, the brain gets different information for vergence and accommodation. I'm not a doctor, but I suspect if you use current-generation VR for too long, you may suffer from accommodation dysfunction (maybe even permanent, say you will have problem to focus on objects near you).
As for 3D TV - the problem isn't so bad, at least if you do your demo properly, i.e. put convergence point exactly at the screen plane. But with VR obviously you want to change convergence point freely as you play/look around. So, it is a pain for me to admit as well, as I understand the need to "prepare" the market - and apparently it's going well, but we will have to wait a decade or so for the real thing ;P

Optimus,
I used to be sick very quickly in a car (give me a book and 5 minutes are enough), so I guess I know what motion sickness can do.
What I read about SteamVR is, due to the fact all what you see is directly the consequence of your real movements (turning head, walking, jumping...), your brain isn't screwed up (as you can be a in moving car, your body doesn't move but your brains receive movement information). You don't push a button, a pad to move.
So I did not try more than 40 minutes but I did not perceive any bad feelings, it was very natural. the only strange thing is to look on your feet and see nothing on the floor (I mean no feet/shoes).
To avoid bashing in anything, this is easy, at setup time, when you install the laser basestations, you define a box (in real space), and so in the virtual space, when you are near the "real" limits, a set of blue lines appear (a little like a jail grid) to tell you don't go further.
Then you're right.... we will need a dedicated room in our houses, like a Holodeck :D
I read that the devs are looking to make it working in a space which is not totally free of things but looks difficult.
I was thinking it could give a new chance to Arcade centers ! Would be better than to go to a fitness centers...
Tomkh.... we'll see... for sure a massive usage is not for tomorrow but I don't underestimate our capability to adapt :)

Remember when Valve used to make critically acclaimed things? Yeah.
VR used to be cool when they did shit Hollywood movies about it! for some reason companies think 3D is the next big thing, but 3DTVs are a fiasco and 3D movies are simply bad and annoying to watch so I have no high hopes for VR, so let's move along to more interesting innovations now shall we?!
Maali, I agree 3D tv is useless but this is nothing related. Try to test SteamVR then tell me if we should move along or not :) Make your own opinion. I thought like you before.
I can imagine a real Drematorium with this :)

Well, but it's just 40 minutes. Try using VR 4-5 hours a day (and that's about half of typical steam user) and I'm really curious about your eye-vision report.
Don't get me wrong - I do like the feeling of "being there in VR". It's just still bad for us - unfortunately.
And obviously many people will not care and become presbyoptic earlier (hopefully just that lol).
tomkh, you're definitely right, 40min is not enough. And if people get too addicted there will be more issues than early presbyopia :)
Personally I've got myopia and astigmatism so I'm nearly protected :D.
And if we believe Scifi and Cyberpunk authors, those VR world would become quickly a new kind of drug :)
Choose your pill.

according to those authors 3d headsets are useless since everyone bears a direct vr-to-cortex link anyway ;)
