How to organise MOD / XM / S3M, etc.
category: general [glöplog]
I'm planning to download dozens of my favourite tracker music files for listening on XMPlay, VLC and Droidsound on Amazon, but I'm not sure if I should just leave them in a single listing or sort by demo or artist.
Whatever floats your boat, I suppose.
sol_hsa: Come on, this is important enough to START A TOPIC ABOUT!!!
I'm already anticipating for a part II: the proper filename syntax.
Artist - Title? Title - year - artist? The possibilities are endless!

i would sort them using the bogosort algorithm!
OCD and indecisiveness are a bad combo!
The only correct sorting is by file size, smallest first, obviously!

All mine would be at the end of the list!

Dreamfish - mod.nemesis 3 - 2424 bytes
That one would be one of the first :)

I no longer have those files, btw.
Does the filename store the main title of the file, or is it within the file's data? I've seen different sites use different filenames for the same .mod, so I figure no. Besides, I'd have to change the name to move the extension in any case, so it would be "*.mod" rather than "mod.*".
Please, it's only one topic and you can easily ignore it. And there's no need for the sarcasm, guys!

I made a 200 byte XM of Snow White's 'Heigh Ho' and I guess I'd also be at the end as i made multiple 25-45 MB XMs as well :D

Does the song title being store in the file itself also apply to S3M, XM, IT, SID and SAP?

I guess h0ffman meant amiga mods (as i did too) but 200 bytes is nice in any case :)
And sorry for derailing the thread, Foebane.
It's OK, Serpent.
I found out the answer to my above question, in any case. Seems filename can be modified without compromising title, etc.

Archives compromise my beautiful filenames by renaming them to match the titles. :P
Here's how you do it.
Saga, how can you tell what the music is from the title? Seems like a lot to remember, especially as I've already memorised the songs from their demo prod titles and groups rather than musician, it would be a lot to unlearn it all.
Lol, there's at least 4 mods in that screencap that could be mine and are probably not :D
okkie: That is probably a correct assumption :)
Foeboe72: I don't? I have a properly tagged XMPlay library, filenames don't matter. I prefer leaving filenames to be the original filename chosen by the author.

Also, to extend on my previous post: Yes, I also sort mods into artist folders, but only if the amount of mods per artist is worth the effort. I.e. if I can be pretty sure that I will never have more than those one or two mods from a certain author, I will just dump it in the main directory.
I do it this way...
[Folder]Format -> [Folder]Artist -> [Module]Title
I would like to do it this way...
[Folder]Format -> [Folder]Artist -> [Folder]Year -> [Module]Title
But, sadly, the release date info of each module is not always available.
Dammit, even the artist name could not be available if the module is enough old!

What I decided to do was a simple variation on the old MP3 files I produced and distributed:
I simply download all the MOD files available for a given Amiga demo (Kestra is a good place to start) and then put the group name, followed by the demo name, followed by a number in brackets (in multi-mod demos) which indicates when they play, to keep it in order. This way, I can quickly track down the desired music and play from there, then all I have to worry about is whether the module player (XMPlay, Droidsound, etc) can handle it, like a competent orchestra or not.
I think this is a much simpler and easier method to maintain than to try and create full-blown MP3s that require much editing and so forth, and making sure I get consistent high-quality sources to begin with (YouTube sucks for this, but it's the only way sometimes) and having to use emulators as I don't have access to real retro computers. At least, with the raw data that once played on the real Amiga or C64 hardware and took up a fraction of the space of MP3s, the field is open for improved playback on mobile and desktop devices in the future.

So do you actually rename the mod files? How do you then know what the original file name was.
