Survey: golden age of 4k intros

category: general [glöplog]
Survey link:

From roughly 2007 to 2009, the majority of very popular 4k intros were released - I am interested in finding the reason(s) for this spike in quality, and the post-2010 decline.

- - - - - - Notes - - - - - -
1. The metric for judging "very popular" in this case is Pouet upvotes.
2. The release count is based on Pouet data, very kindly provided by Gargaj.
3. The purpose of this survey is to gather data for writing an article about constraints and the effect they have on creativity.

- - - - - - Disclaimer - - - - - -
I know that there will most likely be some who (for some reason which I'm sure I'm about to find out) will take offense at this sort of thing. Please just be aware that I'm not doing this to negatively comment on anybody or anything. YOUR RESPONSES WILL OF COURSE BE TOTALLY ANONYMOUS, and not used beyond the scope of writing an article.

If you choose to take part, a big thanks and hug to you. I owe you a pepperschnapps! :D

In any case - have a good day now :-)

a bit of data.. you'll find this in the survey as well

So, popularity is the same as quality, and Crinkler made it all possible and video killed the radio star etc, and you want official stamp of legitimization for these claims by giving people this slightly convoluted Like button. And if someone disagrees, it's taking offence, which is stupid. Or what. ;)

yzi: no, I'm just gathering data and looking at what they tell me, and if I get 400 responses saying Crinkler had nothing to do with it, but rather it was due to new technological possibilities in graphics hardware, then that's where the data takes me :)

You're giving options like "size is not an issue anymore, because of Crinkler". Separate the things, man. Is size an issue. If yes, why. If not, why. Size can be an issue if you're trying to do something that's very difficult to fit in the 4k size using whatever you're using. Size is not an issue if you don't aim very high. Maybe size is not an issue because the audience has seen everything and it's just harder and harder to come up with new impressive stuff. Maybe size is not an issue, because in other categories it's easier to do new stuff, because the categories haven't been explored exhaustively yet. Maybe size is not an issue, but it has nothing to do with Crinkler.

I'm not *telling you* Crinkler is responsible for good 4k's - I'm *asking* whether it plays a part, I think there's a difference :)

I know that my questions are not perfect, but 1) you have to start somewhere, and 2) that's why there are many freetext fields so people can supply information rather than just choose predefined answers.

finally - I'm writing about this largely from an outside perspective (being an artist/designer) - so this is basically about finding out stuff: gathering data, as I said. I'll take all the data I can get, your comments included (so thanks) :)

It's certainly interesting. I'm not really that knowledgeable on the subject, also because I've simply not seen many 4k's from before this period, partially because I only got into the scene in about 2006, but I'm definitely curious what people think about this (:

"Are you using Crinkler for compression?" is hard to answer when you dont do 4Ks as asked in an earlier question
So when did raymarching / sphere tracing become popular again...?

Maali: in your case, I would put "no".

You big doody-head :)

Gargaj: the graph showing that was lost in a harddisk crash.

No offence but the questions really didn't seem to have been written by someone who's used to data modeling or analysis. ;)

4k size stopped being an issue for me after I started using the same base framework I use for 1k intros, just replacing GM with 4klang. Very little native code, almost everything in GLSL. Now the problem is I just suck at making visuals and don't spend enough time creating new effects. I should also explore 4klang's possibilities more. 1k intros are more fun, because it still feels like a fresh category.

none taken, because your analysis is spot on :) And thanks for the insight, that angle didn't occur to me at all.

How about other factors. What other things happened around those years? Nowadays people just watch youtube and don't even bother running the damn things. Crinkler's fault?

Those things are pretty much what I'm hoping to learn :) If I knew, I wouldn't need to ask the educated masses.

yzi: it struck me.. you seem to care a great deal about the subject - do you want to help me make that survey better? shoot me a mail at mogens@skjoldbroder.dk if so :)

Are you going to sell crinkler? ;)

Or more likely: a lot of people just don't have a PC powerful enough to run them at decent framerates.

i think the sudden increase in 4k popularity is because of the crinkler+iq-framework-raymayrcher combination that got really popular at that time. but then most of the basic things had been done and while it still remains some sort of de facto standard it getting harder and harder to produce something fresh and popular with it.
or something.

Because the last years of 4K was just... load shader... oh look, a signed distance function.

Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
