Revision 2015 - 3rd to 6th April - Saarbrücken, Germany

category: parties [glöplog]
Sesse, for all your complaining I hope you have bought a "I can't be there but want to support Revision" ticket!

To be frank the stream wasn't very stable for me either (lq), but hey, it was watchable, thanks for providing it!

Kylearan: If Scamp claims everything is perfect and I want to back up my claim it wasn't, is that complaining? Let me reiterate: I think it was much better than last year, but it wasn't perfect.

As for supporting Revision: Back when I was part of TG organizing (which I am no longer), we offered Scenesat help with Revision streaming bandwidth five years in a row (possibly longer; I don't want to dig up the logs). There was, however, never any material interest, save for one point where we tried setting up an emergency solution in the middle of the very last compo of one year. Revision is perfectly well allowed to want to run their own stream their own way, but please don't claim I haven't tried helping them with this.

I found the streams pretty close to perfection. Actually I had expected it to be much, much worse. For not being a multi-million $$$ organization, IMO the Revision team did a perfect job.

Thanks to all making this possible.

watched the prize giving LQ stream and it was all streaming fine from start to end. Nice!

I didn't say "everything is perfect", but the setup we ended up with yesterday pretty much is. And this will be reproduced next year, so stuff works fine from the start then.

I did not see any offer on providing streaming server resources from you for the last years. OTOH, an offer for help isn't always the solution - this year scene.org offered their 10GBit server resources, and this turned out to not work at all, due to the server having massive packet loss. Getting servers which are well connected, good performing and have good peerings with all major European ISPs is a challenge. In addition, most streaming server software also is a buggy pain to work with. crtmpserver wasn't compatible with the encoders RTMP stream, nginx-rtmp crashed from time to time, and Adobe Media Servers HLS is buggy.

If you wish to offer relay servers for next year, you are most welcome to do that. Drop us a line 2 weeks prior to easter weekend 2016, and we'll provide you instructions on how to pull from the origin server.

scamp: I offered it to Scenesat, who did the stream at the time; I also talked to acryd one year. If the people doing the stream isn't the right place and they also didn't relay the information on to the right place, this is hard for me to do anything about.

But OK, let's look forward. Like I said, I am no longer involved in TG organizing, so I am less in a position to help directly than I've been in the past, but I'll be happy to push the agenda in any way that I can. (Contrary to popular belief, TG as an organization wishes all well for the demoscene—which includes Revision.) As soon as I know what the relevant organizing team for TG16 looks like, I'll talk to them and put them in contact with you, OK?

Great time watching the demos on the stream with all the other sofasceners. The demos this year were out of this world!

Will definitely try and go for real next year. :D

What a party. wow. What ham said and i must add, this were the best streams i can remember having for a demoparty. High quality! Over the complete weekend i may have missed 1 minute due to stream issues, not more. If thats not a record and worthy of honouring, i don't know what is. THANK YOU!
Now i will rewatch everything again \o/

I'm back at the hotel, finally, and would like to put down my thoughts in one place before I forget any.

Some suggestions for next year:

  • Find a way to bring the power hubs a little closer to the inner aisle. They currently are stuck close to the middle of each side, and favor the edges of the hall. Most power strips I see don't have a long enough extension to reach that by themselves from the inner end tables.
  • The music compos are shown anonymously, but something or someone uploads the tracks to the FTP before voting is over with full artist names. Yes, I know, some people can tell who it is by listening, but if you really want them to be anonymous, wait until voting closes to upload those tracks to the FTP or upload them without the artist names.

Anyway, the party was rather nice again this year and big thanks to the organizers, especially because of the big cleaning up after us. I think next year people should help them out a bit by moving all trash to the bags at the ends of the tables and their bottles to the inner aisle end before they leave. I did the front right two rows and the front left to help out.

Also this year, lesson learned, I brought way too much stuff. Thanks to everyone who came and tried out Pocky, green tea Kit Kats, caffeinated marshmallows, and such. I think the caffeinated marshmallows will make a return.

As said before, I was the person behind the beer chits. It was interesting in that do you keep it because you haven't seen it before and may not again or is it a demoparty and you need another beer? From what I learned, at least according to v3nom, nobody turned theirs in to the info desk. You could have, and in theory they would have honored it as I left them a bit to cover the possibility of attempts. However, I think they're worth more kept because they're different. If you got one it's because you were asleep at your desk or I set it down while you were away. Only two at the end of the party were given out non-surreptitiously: one to Fei and the example one I left info desk to Metoikos. I believe Bonefish might have gotten one, someone next to LFT got one, and I have no idea where the rest went.

I also passed out a few ScenePoint tokens. Congratulations! You now have more one more scene point than everyone else! Show off your wealth at every opportunity. With 100 ScenePoints and €65, you get free entry to a demoparty! :P

As to the glow bracelets and necklaces, let me know if you enjoyed that and I should do it again. If I do bring some next year would you prefer they be in a more common location to get one, like the info desk, an announcement of where to get one, or both? If you guys would like them again, I'll try to see about finding a good cheap deal like I did this year.

I also dispersed four toy light and sound space guns, which floated around. One even made it in to a compo opening with Okkie. :) If you got one, the battery case is serviceable and has a commonly found screw head. The batteries should last you quite a while as I had taken them out for travel and put in some lithiums I had after I got to the hotel before the party.

Anyway, the entire weekend rocked, and now I get to deal with being super tired and having to go back to work on Wednesday wishing there was still more party. :P I hope to see everyone again next year! I also hope I remember to bring less stuff. Let me know if there was something you got or saw this year you'd like to see me try to bring back next year.

Sorry to the board gamers that we didn't get anything in. I think the weekend is packed as it is, and though there was downtime in the mornings most aren't really awake. We'll have to organize an official time to do it around the potential schedule if we want it to happen I think.

I ran out of key fobs. They're all gone. I gave the remaining SceneSat ones to Ziphoid to handle, the Revision ones went to the info desk and were set out on the front rail. I passed out some Nectarine ones then put the rest in a box that said "FREE" on the info desk rail. You should see me talk a lot less about key fobs now because of that (yay?) as I also don't have any plans to make another batch. The least of which being I'd have to buy more wood to do so as I used up all I had. Maybe the next few will be acrylic? :) Anyway, I think if anything returns of that sort it'll have to be a different design and probably not Nectarine as I've now/already saturated the people who want one of those I think.

Speaking of that, it was great to get together again with the Nectarines again. If you didn't know, despite being a website with a lot of listeners, there's a bunch of us that do get together at Revision and sit together. Our table was second from the front on the right, as facing the screen, this year. We had quite a few show up, including some I hadn't met before. Not all the Nectarines who go to Revision sit there, but if you'd like to we definitely wouldn't shun visitors or new tablemates. Just let us know when the "Revision 2016 Thread" pops up on the Nectarine forums so we can get an idea of how much table space we need to fit in.

Finally thanks to everyone who traded me stuff. I got a t-shirt from Darklite, a Riverwash mug from Fei (along with a taste of waffle vodka), a special large Kinder egg from Thexder (already eaten; it had DIY dress-up paper Minions in it), a bottle of wine from Arrakis, some salmiakki (which I traded to Halcy for some Club-Mate; sorry, it's not really my thing, but thanks for giving them to me!), and SVatG for the Club-Mate.

TL;DR: I had a great time. Sad that it's over. Thanks for people who gave me stuff, and thanks to people who got stuff from me. Seeya next year!
While we're tearing down the place, here's the results: Revision 2015 Competition results

Thanks for the results!

Three requests:

1. Please upload the prods from yesterday evening to scene.org. Thanks!
2. It would be nice to view all prods briefly at the end in reverse order again. That would also balance out the presentation order a bit.
3. At least for us sofasceners there is no prod entry list. This would be very helpful after each compo has been done. Best accomplished with a screenshot.

Fantastic party, fantastic compos, great stream. Some small hickups here and there but at least I didn't miss anything major in the compos this time around :)

Even though getting there this year would've been exceedingly difficult, I really started to regret not opting for it a week ago. As long as some of my friends are willing to take the trip next year, I will be there.

Awesome! This was by far the best Revision party ever. Big yourselves up orgas and sceners!!! For me, mostly due to the very friendly overall atmosphere and the great productions in every compo. Well done to all :)

Great party, enjoyed and extra special thanks to Topy for making the glorious "nopee" Quadtrip shirts. Big love to Revision organizing.

PS. Santa, thx for the booze.

I double the praises to the streaming team: screw the moaners, thanks a lot for the effort and the additional last-minute bandwidth donation!

Thanks to all involved in the party organizing, and thanks to all for the good mood and the awesome prods.

Side note: I'm still in Saarbrücken, waiting for my train at 21h00. Any scener still around would go for a beer or a coffee?

Indeed! You would probably have enjoyed our tracked music entry again, even though I still cannot comprehend how it ranked lower than my MP3 entry in comparison. Maybe I should just go for loud DnB next year instead. </sarcasm>

This party was just awesome in every possible way. Great organizing, great people, great great great entries. Let's hope it stays like this.

PS: Whoever put Netpoet's sticker on the urinal in the Burgerking at the Autobahn near Ramstein: You rule.
The Starbucks is closing. I'll be on my way to Burgerking to see that. :)

Awesome stuff, thanks a lot for all the hard work put into this. You guys rock. Special thanks to Styx for handling all the sponsorship business in a good way.

I have a single complaint (apart from the fact that the music compos still are anonymous, but that's an old and infected discussion), and that's the stuttering video on the bigscreen. This was really painful at times - especially during the oldskool demo compo - and if there's one area you invest in improving for next year I would recommend that one. I'm not sure if the issue lies with the capturing or the playback equipment, but I think both scenarios can be fixed while staying within a very reasonable budget.

Now I'll go home and die, and then resurrect and work on some productions. Inspiration += 100.
