Demoscene Zeitgeist: 2004 in Review
category: general [glöplog]
It must be a preety good year for me. Well,. you know, I was in Karlsruhe and visited as many parties as I didn't five years ago (Sota 2004, CPC only meeting 2, 0a000h 2003, Breakpoint 2004, ReAct2004). Meeting with sceners I hadn't seen before in real life. Boozing with those people!
Much more things happened. Oh, I got kicked by Pouet, getting into deep worries about why I am in the scene and what am I doing here for few months. Then, I also released my 1st C64 demo. And lately (from October) I found my own true reasons for doing what I am currently doing which boosted for a while my creativity until it dropped down for odd reasons before I have finished something.
My favorite 2004 event: Breakpoint, demo: Heartcore

>0a000h 2003 (???)
this came out and made 2004 a great norwegian scene year.
BCN was the best.
Last time I checked the topic was not "Review of Optimus life in 2004". Somebody got a big ego there...
Have to still see what all cool things happen at tUM, but so far my best memories come from Assembly'04.
Probably never had so much fun coding a demo even when the party had already started, then going to Boozembly to hang out with all the cool people, and finally winning a compo. Yay! :)

Winnin the demo compo at BCN and partying with the stravaganza+other cool spanish people are amongst my best memories of 2004.
Also buying a new xbox from the price money we got for coding a demo on a burning xbox was cool, in a way.
Visiting Scene Event without breaking all my hardware was a total surprise :)

Well, the time has come that we can all finally ask this question.
Once again I want to wish everyone a happy new year...

Yeah, BCN gets my vote too :)
Disco is one its way back into demos.
dominei's laptop-keyboard is strange.
Hmm, yeah, the start part of 2004, the end part, and the parts in between where I was meeting everyone at parties and so on. Cuz there were a LOT of sceners I met. Without 2004, I woudln'ta met'tem.
hmmm 2004. some flashbacks:
- ridiciously huge bonfire at breakpoint. singing "code inside me" with dixan, ps and the others for quite some time while waiting for the compos
- solskogen being yet another regnskogen, beating even the 2002 edition with almost continous rain.
- dutch people and their beer pool at scene event. okkie not knowing when to stop talking about dead prostitutes.
- pre-assembly picnic at suomenlinna with petanque, red-wine and baguette (are we turning into french or what?)
- painstation at evoke and sir garbagetruck screaming out loud. yoda crashing his bmw on autobahn and kb telling about it totally wasted and traumatized.

FYaNiCa, Breakpoint, Symphony, Assembly, Buenzli, Evoke, Function, tUM...
Seems I visited almost all possible parties this year... :)

Christ, did someone mention Doom3 in relation to the demoscene?
yes,was me...it's engine just turns me on in a pretty horny way
tUM and Scene Event was the best.... Scene Event was my first party, and tUM had a *great* atmosphere.
It was also cool to travel to Austria and meet some of the other members from my group, but Function wasn't very good.
I also went to a small party, The Meltdown, which was pretty okay.
I'll be at TMD, SE, and tUM again next year, and besides, I'd like to visit BP and Evoke.

i made my first demo i like.
Being organizer at 3 parties with differnet locations and different styles, meeting many people (the infoteam is not that bad ;) ), finally getting all that cute orgashirts,...
The trip to and from Symphony will also stay in my brain for some time. It's just too shocking when driving 5-10 metres behind a wood transporting truck and finally trying to pass it being passed at the same time by another truck at the speed of 80-110 km/h on a street which has not enough space for two trucks and a small Polo between them...
The strange part was, when I arrived back in Germany I asked at some point myself, how I will be able to drive at a small (but pretty normal) main road at 100 km/h with some oncoming traffic here and then. Polish streets rule in some way, in some other they are horrible. ;)
Anyway, taken 1 of 3 planned polish parties is not a good result, I hope I can do it better this year. ;)

I thought the Doom3 engine was just Quake with a corny plastic shader.
Basically Tenebrae with new content.
No, I'd rather look at Planet Risk.

Scali: here's not the place to discuss Doom3, anyway take it a more deeper look, it's not just that simple as you describe.
Anyway PlanetRisk kick ass :D
