Announcing The Meteoriks - A new demoscene award
category: general [glöplog]

OK let's count... There were 62 demoparties in 2014 according to demoparty.net. Top 5 from each party makes 310 entries per category per party. 8 compo/prodtype related awards makes a grand total of 2480 prods to view for each jury member of the "Defiance awards".
In a parallel universe where every single one of those 62 parties held 8 separate demo/intro/wild compos (I'm assuming we're not counting standalone graphics/music here, since there's been no mention of the awards covering those), with 5 or more releases in each one, you might have a valid point there.

Something tells me that D.Fox's assumption about the possibilities to find willing and capable jury members for such an undertaking may be correct after all.
havoc: you are misinterpreting my words. i made a simple suggestion that more likely is going to be ignored whatsoever, never spoke of holding awards with my handle as their name, nor did i ever wanted something like this to happen. and yes d.fox is right about jury members. if you read my answer to maali's comment then you will understand what i'm talking about. finally, what i suggested is something that the jury of the scene.org awards were probably doing if you look at the results of the scene.org awards over the years, so i don't think this hasn't been done before.
gasman: don't assume, read http://meteoriks.org/categories
defiance: have you volunteered for the jury yet?
defiance: have you volunteered for the jury yet?
defiance: but if you read what i said, the jury of the scene.org awards weren't doing it, you assume wrong. clearly there's a logical connection that top prods also get decent ranks at demoparties and attention on pouet for that matter and end up as nominees, but there's never been automagic selection based on party ranking, pouet popularity or similar criteria. actually the manual selection process looked quite like the meteoriks one, except that the jury picked and motivated the demos, not the audience.
maali: thanks for clearing that out :)
havoc: I did. Nothing on that page explicitly states that standalone graphics / music are or aren't eligible. However, I'm going to continue to assume that they aren't, given that:
* the category names more or less match the ones used by the scene.org awards, which didn't feature them (and yes, I know that the Meteoriks aren't an official follow-up to the scene.org awards)
* the "High end graphics" category is defined as "Best visual effects", which would suggest that there's no suitable category for stuff made in Photoshop / Blender
* the word "soundtrack" generally (but not exclusively) refers to music accompanying visuals
* likewise, the word "production" is generally used within the scene (e.g. on Pouet and Demozoo) to refer to audiovisual work.
If my assumption is wrong, then I think the website probably needs to clarify that.
But now that you've got me in fact-checking mode, I shall point out that there's a separate jury per category, which means that when you multiply by 8 to give a workload "for each jury member", you're making your figures even more bogus than they were before.

As long as the trophy will be ugly and many people enraged, all will be well. ;)
Btw, according to this, you can only be a juror for one category (and there are nine)?

gasman: you're in fact-checking mode? great, please do me a favour and check if i ever claimed standalone graphics and music categories :)
Tomase: "You can apply for more than one category"
tomaes, even. Sorry :)
Thanks for this nice surprise \o/

Let me first say: AWESOME INITIATIVE! Between the monster megacool DUBawards we need a little sceneaward replacement! Also read this post as is in a non-critic sidelined comment with no bad intentions, and not to be interpeted as troll food ;)
Then: I admit I have not been reading most of the comments in this post; nor the stuff I should have read on the website itself.... This post is mostly a result of people I do not really know contacting me(?!) asking questions about Meteoriks. How the suck-a-banana-blindfolded-with-tits-and-ass did I get to be a contact-person here? :D
But:
- Do I get it right that THE graphician/musician/coder/'blablatitle' have to submit her/himself with an entry?
- Do I get it right that there is no open general public award, but based on creators submittance and limited to voting on those?
Sorry for not dicking my own groupmembers or other people involved to ask these questions, or read myself up, but these are q's that like 10+ people already asked me. An answer here among the cozy trolls will hopefully make my phone and email less blamed :) (note to those people: I do NOT have anything to do with this award/celebration what so ever!)
... Anyway, here is my non-humble shitty opinion(if the above='true'): For me it seem really really weird to "pre-nominate" yourself. I would feel really non-comfortable with that and also it really don't make sense to me in the view of "what people actually like" against "I am so great, I will win this no matter if people think it sucks!".
Sorry for not bothering filling up on all info and for asking lame questions, but this is written between two patterns of an 8bit tracker with three channels. I have X amount of time to use in the middle of work/beer/friends/hospitaliziation and changing nextgen-darkliters' diapers, and that little "pffft" of energy left is used with caution in a trackers interface. And in this post :P

(meanwhile I'll close my eyes and submit myself)

The Meteoriks are named after the deceased Giles 'Meteorik/Meaty' Constant to honor his dedication to the demoscene and the inspiration he was to others within the community
Call me ignorant, but who? A bit more information would be nice. (and if I'm this ignorant, vast majority of people will be more so).

I like the idea and I appreciate all the effort that was, is and will go into this. Looking forward to the first installment.
However, there was one thought that crossed my mind instantly when i read this thread.
The Meteoriks also could have been "in honour of all the deceased-before-their-time demosceners and their dedication to the demoscene and the inspiration they were to others within the community."
But since its a personal effort and not some kind of demoscene representative project, this is of course a decision of the creators.
