let me say how it was, in quick words:
gone on the 21.12. from vienna over frankfurt to phuket/thailand. had 4 great days there. till the 25.12. i woke up of some vibration, thought of nothing, felt asleep.
my gf, and me went 1 hour later to breakfast, and after that we returned to the hotelroom to get our things, ready to the sea. going to the sea, the sun was hot and shining , lucky day, about 33C. now it comes: beeing at the front of the beach, i wanted to make a photo, meanwhile i have seen that the whole ocean had gone back for about 600 meters. local (thais) started to run inside the ocean, to get the fishes for free, this was the moment i thougt: when it gets inside, it must come again, no way why but thats physics. so me and my gf, started to run inside of the land, and jumped over an garden, there was a hotel, left from us nothing, just the football field, right i saw the fire ladder, climbed up, both, and on halfway the tsunami crashed over, destroyed mostly there.
up the building i saw a 2nd wave, which was huger then the first one, crashed iinto patong beach and gets the rest.
sad thing: local people started to plunder everything after the 2 waves.
we had luck, we got flyn out with "deutsche luftwaffe" 3 days after it happens.
smell of death was there, and still lots of bodys swimming in the ocean..

personally i'd recommend anyone "who was there" to write an article to pain instead of hugi

Sorry if this is innapropriate of me asking, though I'm guessing you have gone over this in your head many times by now. I've tried to get an idea about what happend just before the wave came. You said that the ocean went back out 600 m. Can you describe this more closely? A couple of questions:
How fast did the water sink away? Did it take just seconds?
How long did it take until the wave came from that you noticed that the ocean started going away?
What was the waves like? Was it typical waves or did the waster just rise very fast?

mri: the ocean goes back for about 600 meters, thats what i think, it can be right/false, i told i guessed that. and it happens fast. also i guess from the start where the ocean goes back to the 1st wave there was time for about 1,5 to 2 minutes. so not really much.
one more thing: i was not out on new years eve, i stayed home, and will spend the money to the people there. i would also do this if i had not been there at that moment.
