I need to be fit. Any suggestions?

category: offtopic [glöplog]
Optimus, you're not alone... I have struggled with my weight for 1.5 decades and it is always a source of anxiety (which of course leads to more eating and weight gain). I almost considered not going to Revision this year because I didn't want people to meet me for the first time in my current form.

Wish I had something encouraging to say, but I don't, sorry :-(

Never fear coming to demoparties due to being overweight. I'd say it's the standard size for many eurosceners :)

Yes, and never lose hope. You can always lose weight, if you really, really want. Otherwise, you'd have a medical conditionn, which could be confirmed by a doctor. Then all is lost and you just have to life with being fatty.

But if that's not the case, don't worry too much. There's always hope. Sometimes it just needs the right spark, at the right time.

Subscribe at Fernando's Gym.

Nah, just do manly things and avoid counting calories like the plague. That's for fat women.

I bet Optimus hasn't been one day at the gym since 2009, when he first started this thread.

I have been and it doesn't work miracles.

You guys have it easy. Oh, if you did a bit of gym, suddenly your metabolism would do miracles. Oh, if you ate less or ate those ingredients suddenly everything would change.

Or you make contradictions. It's about calories. No it's not about calories. Everyone has his theory.

It's really simple. Just do some basic research into the types of food you're best off eating (don't be surprised if that turns out to be a lot of protein, iron and fat (yes, fat)) to boost your testosterone, work out daily (50 pushups 50 situps before you hit the shower and before you go to bed) -- no slacking off with this and why would you, it takes a few minutes. And go for runs to burn fat and calories twice a week or find something likewise that's less boring.

Works for me. And sure, I have a somewhat athletic build type so it's probably easier, but I'm guessing that more than half (if not more) of the moaners spend more time at their local Wallmart reading the back side of a cereal box for irrelevant numbers than they actually implement and stick with a routine like this -- just for *starters*.

High intensity stuff like bag training (boxing) or squash are both good ones and more fun than running around aimlessly, but to each his own.

And I meant less time reading cereal boxes, more time *doing* things :) Excuse me I'm heavily flu-ridden. Doesn't stop me from doing the routine twice daily, though.

We need an edit button.

if its not been said already.. being fit is not always the same as eating well.

i did the gym thing for quite a while 10 years ago, i didnt really change diet too much but my general cardio fitness, and some muscle tone definitely improved.

i like getting outdoors on a mountain bike, and have even done the 21 mile commute to work this year in one direction (train home!), I aim to do it an average of once per month this year. i don't get the lycra clad road bike thing, but i enjoy getting out in the wild, in the hills or countryside on an off road bike.

my opinion is, i'd much rather be cardio fit, meaning not out of breath so quickly and be able to exercise without feeling achey for several days afterwards, than eat a diet that puts me at a lower weight and still be 'unfit'

Diets without medical necessity are nonsense, but there is such a thing as feeding yourself roughly what your body needs. Any type of training goes at least partially unrewarded if you're stuffing your face with fries and milkshakes instead of just decent nutrients. The latter having nothing to do with a diet really, just good taste :)

Being fit is not the same as eating well, but not eating garbage will definitely improve your state of being, especially when you get older. Cupe's post in the soylent thread sums it up real nicely.

also, optimus clearly doesn't want a solution, because this thread is filled with useful advice to start getting fit and feeling better. He wants some surefire miracle solution that has him lose weight but still makes him able to eat garbage food and somehow this should all happen instantly.

that first "a solution" is supposed to be "advice" we indeed need that edit functionality

Optimus a calorie is the amount of heat it takes to warm up one gram of water by one degree celcius at one atmosphere pressure. If you eat a wild excess of food labelled "high in calories", you will get fat. But its not that simple if you dont pig out because our metabolisms differ. Lowering your intake of simple carbohydrates to 100grams or less per day, will make a difference given that you dont eat nothing but junkfood.

Dont shy away from vegetables, they are good for you. But do eat plenty of protein and fat because the protein will make you feel satiated and you are less likely to snack inbetween meals and saturated fat is a fine source of energy (in place of carbs because eating plenty of both together your "caloric" intake is likely going to be too much and you will gain weight).

Atkins was on to something. But like Okkie said, if youre looking for an easy fix that allows for you to eat junk food well....its possible;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evcNPfZlrZs

but it still requires you to have discipline. You dont even have to go to the gym, just walking a bit every day is enough but without discipline youre going to fail no matter what you try, be it Atkins, Paleo, Vegan, Raw Vegan or whatever. Because done right all of it works!

It doesnt take days or weeks. It should take atleast +2 months before you see some minor results. If you stick to a plan that you believe in, depending on how big you are, you will be starting to see results in 6 months, and depending on how much you work out - walk in the woods - whatever activity you may be doing and depending on how little food you eat and burn. The type off food should not be that important, unless you have some medical reason not to.

The body is a biological system. and i't can't work out miracles unless you or someone else helps you do something about it. you are in charge of your own mind and body. The more you stick to one plan that you believe in, the easier it will be to see results in the future. if its hard to look one year ahead, then take small steps, one week at a time. make a schedule or figure out anything that would help you achieve your goal.
