demo effects database

category: general [glöplog]

I'm looking for an Amiga demo effects database with information on world records, world first etc. for different demo effects. Do we have such a list?

Not as far as I know; probably because some of the effects are often hard to define.

This thread had some interesting discussion on different old school effects and when they were first used.

Thankz guys, it is a shame that there isn't a more complete list available.

Sure is. Maybe you can fix that?
Yeah, make a demo... err...Wiki about it!

Another call for resurrecting Demopedia, clearly!
World records are so 1993's!

not really since some records were broken on Amiga with that Jelly cube contest held lately :)

Yeah a demo effects wiki would be cool. I will look into starting one.
I googled demopedia and found some strange sites, no demo scene related ones though. But it would be good name use.

We started one here (click More Options). Mostly, effects are mislabeled, misperceived, or called by strange names or mixed up with other effects, so you'll need a bunch of seasoned coders to create a very restrictive list of demos from their own suggestions for "first effect x" or "best effect x".

That's the best way for avoiding mislabeling, irrelevant (coder-made-demo-to-trick-other-coders) demos, or general "but demo is famous and awesome and says that it made effect x or first x or broke record x" contributions, I think. :)

In other words, it would be best if the database/wiki is made for the single purpose and trusted members put their reputation on the line by posting claims.

And yes, some effects are both hard to define and hard to distinguish as separate effects, as I posted in the thread drift mentioned.

Let me have a think and see what I can do wiki/database-wise, maybe I can make some mock-up to give ideas.

Now we are talking photon! Let me know when you have a mock up ready and then I can help you with feed back and generating ideas etc.
I think that as many as possible shall be able to contribute. But of course it needs be reviewed by a team of members with high credibility.

Demopedia is here btw, but it's pretending to be a vegetable at the moment.

Well the Demopedia idea was more or less DOA, but if you want to make a demo-effect-database out of it (and mediawiki can handle 'effect-trees' like photon described here), why not?

At least you can get some info about bike theft http://demopedia.scene.nl/wiki/Community_if_there_were_two_consecutive_month_bike_theft_cases ;)

Just kidding, perhaps new user registration should be disabled or less automatic?

Or simply bother to actually integrate the ConfirmEdit (to be more precise: The QuestyCaptcha variant) extension which is actually shipped with Mediawiki.
Just parse all the BITS posts and it's done.
