Matt Gray Kickstarter

category: music [glöplog]
I suggest this thread be renamed from "Matt Gray Kickstarter" to the more apt "Annual Hatstand Crazy Analogy Free-for-all of 2014".

Everything was already said, and even more.

What I wantedo to put out was/is that:
1. Everyone works as he used to, has its own way.
2. One is working 10h/day, another 8h/day, and other person 12h/day.
3. One would be ok with 10E/h, another 25E/h and yet, for an "expert" 50E/h is still not enuff (NOT pointing to noone!).
4. Sure, there are costs in priduction and all "the stuff".
5. There are small "local bands" which make MORE interesting and mature stuff than all those commercially accepted (by whom? by a brain-washing process?) "stars".
There no use in insulting or low talking about the "local-fellaz".
6. Matt, afaIc, is a pro, thus he knows the tools. So the remaking would not be a whole rediscovering process. Should be a pleasure if he wants to achieve a great result!
7. ...and he knows LN2 partition by heart. I hope so ;)

Personally, what pushed me away, at a first and a second glance, was all the not-to-clear and, imo, pretty well calculated "LEVEL" propositions and unlocking. It pushed me away (yet if we have had images together with, it would be more comprehensible than that commercial "blahblahblah").
It gives me the impression of unclarity and unpleasant feeling the project tries to get as much as possible from such a great historical and musical achievement as THE LAST NINJA 2 score is.

No hard feelings. Will still follow the KS, since the score is sooooo great, and Matt is a gifted composer (at least on C=64 he was).

Have a great day!

Truly yours...

Indeed, Matt Gray never was (afaik) affiliated in demo/crackingscene in any way but in game business, with some quite succesful games too, to add. So it's not that weird of him charging money when opportunity raises. Personally i loved, and still love, many of his game tunes and the preview in Soundcloud sounded fine. Although, if this is some more serious effort with session musicians and all i guess the preview is outdated already (?)

Still, won't buy any higher "level" goodies here most probably, heh :)

It isn't really even about whether it's weird or not. It's about whether it's possible or not to do the kind of project he's describing without money. It isn't.

Sure, you can do chiptunes or drum'n'bass tracks in your bedroom for free. Sure, you can do visual hacks that look amazing and may or may not work on people's GPUs for free. You still can't apply that to everything, no matter how much people like Oswald here would like everyone in the world to adhere to their strict art-for-arts-sake ethos.

Sim, I don't want to imply that I think "local bands" are somehow inferior. There's awesome music on the fringes. I'm simply saying that hobbyist musicians and people who play their instruments professionally for a living are two different things.

On a tangent, the fact that "local bands" are expected to work their ass off and take big financial risks with poor prospects of ever breaking even is a problem in itself.

This thread drips of so much stupid it literally hurts to read it.

Serpent,
True, when you are a good musician you have a price, OK. But well, It is still not a new composition (a part of a tune he proposed to compose for a backer), but a remake of TLN2. So imo, basically, the main concept is already done. Now it is diamond-polishing procedure.

AFAI saw, there was not any info about a session musicians, if I am not mistaken.

Jobe,
Thank you for clearing that out. May be I misunderstood your statement, but if not, I wanted to make it polite and making it clear for the sake of all of us =).
Thanks again.

HAhaha, go'd ol' Matt, and what a subject =).
Be well!

Basically what Gloom said. It's not like anyone forces you to pay if you think Matt Gray earns too much money. Why it's necessary to discuss this on 2 pages in this thread already is beyond me! You don't like what Matt Gray is doing? Then don't support his album, where's the problem?

Oh yes, Monsieur X or Y said sth is stupid - so be it, _basically_.
Man... , pouet sandbox "you may say that, not that" continues.

Extremely important message... Instead of just letting this thread die you have to patronise once again, thumbs up!

As the thread was revived anyway, i wonder what Tangerine Dream or Bomb the Bass would have to say about selling Last Ninja 2 remake soundtrack, in case all tunes are included ;P

But i guess nothing, as the game was sold without any drama back then too (?)

I stand by what I said originally.

Guy who was part of Motiv8 and has written many successful game soundtracks starts a KS to garner interest in doing a remake [remix] of one of his more popular game st's. Clearly he owns all the rights and you would expect of a musician of his caliber to have the hardware/studio/connections to mix it himself.

Yet he's got nearly 40k pounds in pledges. Even if he isn't going thru a label (no mention of that on the KS site) 25-40k pounds is a huge amount of money for recording a cd, with session musos and mastering/printing.

Interestingly no-one has gone for the 5000 pound option. Maybe they thought that finding an ad jingle writer to

compose a unique track for you. You can use it in your game, movie, short film or just enjoy it yourself. The recording will be yours to own and the publishing will be shared 50/50 between yourself and Matt. You are free to specify the mood or genre of the music.
might be cheaper.

I meant to say this and add on -
He's going to make money anyway off any sales above and beyond the money he gets from the KS.

soo... good for him?

I don't see what the problem is. Personally I think he's asking a bit too much for the ln2 soundtrack, so I'll just wait and hope it pops up in spotify at some point.

I guess it just sticks in my craw that a professional muso is asking for money for a re-whatever-you-want-to-call-it to mix and produce an album they're already going to make and make money off.
Hey I might KS my next holiday - I'm happy to send pics of my fat, white gut lazing on a beach in the Whitsundays if anyone's prepared to pay.

Kickstarter is just a glorified preorder mechanism in most cases these days anyway.

If you can find the niche who are ready pay for that, well sure (except that kickstarter forbids "fund my life" projects, but maybe you can sell t-shirts or something).

The price doesn't seem so far-fetched.
That he wants to make money in the process doesn't seem to be so crazy, it's a tuff world out there you know.

This I agree with.

I personally think it's this double-dip attitude that will mean more of this -

You could simplify a lot of projects to that, but there are still projects that are all about getting the funding to further what they're doing, show you the process as they go, and eventually bring you the product they wanted to have. Not just get enough funds to pay the factory to do the minimum order on something already done. Of course it's all up to the project creators how much they share, but you don't get inside information on most non-KS pre-orders besides the receipt and the e-mail notice when it finally ships.

Plus if he intends to be able to sell some of those CDs after the Kickstarter, he has to add in a bit per reward to leave him enough to bootstrap his way toward another production run without the help of crowd funding. If you don't, you're left stuck and nobody (well, most people probably) wouldn't be wiling to contribute to a Reformation Print-Run II: A Year Later crowd funding because of a failure on the creator's part to plan.

I would have thought that following his previous career highlights Matt Gray would've already invested fairly heavily in the infrastructure associated with his business - hence the fact that he claims he can mix the album himself.
So really this KS is just beers & skittles money for him as surely if the album is a success he should use the money from the album's sales to cover things like paying the "session musos".

All this looks like to me is using this KS to double-dip on getting money from the punters that are going to buy the album anyway. Maybe he needs to get signed to a record label...
