Are the newer ASD demos corrupt or something?
category: general [glöplog]
A while ago, I could run the ASD demos like Spin and Happiness is Around the Bend with no problems. That was over a year ago, but trying to run them recently, all the graphics have become corrupted, as if there was a change to the graphics drivers from Nvidia that made the demos work incorrectly.
In Spin now, I get odd shapes and a lot of flickering and black, and Happiness just produces severe glitches and lots of random textured polygons - certainly not like the videos.
Has anyone else noticed this?

quick! get someone at nvidia to fix the drivers for old asd demos!
So I wasn't imagining it, nor was my graphics card faulty. Yes, I know that prods are not made to run on as many configs as possible, just long enough to get through the party showing, I imagine, but a video will never replace the genuine article. Plus, demoscene prods are great for testing out GFX cards ;)
I'm guessing the original code was exploiting a bug in the NVIDIA drivers which got fixed.
not all meshes seem to fuck up, so good luck spotting the error! i bet on the SSAO materials!
OpenGL, bringing back excitement to the world of graphics!
From what I understand Navis doesn't keep sources of his demos so nothing is going to be fixed. IMO he should be jailed for that.
Fire and forget - I like it!

How is lacking the sources a problem? Start your hex editor and fix it!

Of course by that you mean it was relying on a feature which has been deprecated. ;)
It definitely has to do with the fact that these demos were coded on ATI hardware, since that's what Navis has. I'm pretty sure there were also performance issues pointed out by nVidia users. I guess it only works on ATI graphics cards now?
Also it looks like it's only a vertex shader problem, since all pixel shader FX like depth of field, ambient occlusion, water ripples, etc. seem to work fine, but the models are all garbled up.
Very strange, but... I guess someone has to do some investigation since ASD's demos are a big part of modern demoscene history.

Just to say that I m pretty sure I can find what the problem is (it s in vertex shaders, I found once) an I think it has to do with version nums. I have source codes but I m way too busy, hopefully making new demos that work. We ll see
If you could ever find the time to fix it - you'd have mine, and I'm sure several other scene watchers and members' eternal gratitude!
Actually, it works quite well now on my Haswell laptop, in WINE :-D
This one still works fine, with no glitch... oh wait ;)
Good news, everyone!
Latest Nvidia drivers have FIXED this issue! Now you can watch those demos in all of their realtime glory! Both demos now work fine, as far as I can see.
My GPU and driver version, just so you know:
GeForce GTX 660 with drivers version 344.11
yeah i phoned them to add a navis exception in the drivers!
anyway yeah, i can confirm that it also is working on my 770 with those new 344.11 drivers
Well, watched them thoroughly and have to report some issues:
Spin: At the part where the panther appears the demo seems to start glitching up. Also, the glow effect isn't here on the title logo.
Happiness is Around the Bend: Textures missing on they toyshop building.
Also, both demos have subpar perfomance on my machine, which I guess is granted since those demos were coded for ATI, not Nvidia.

hmm, someone close to nvidia obviously follows this thread ;)
I can confirn what tomo said about the new drivers, the demos look way better now but the performance in happiness is somewhat ugly. im pretty sure with my OLD gfx card (and the old drivers at that time) i had a better result than this, at least in some scenes (with my 660 ti).
anyway, it is a huge improvement even if there are still problems.
so, mysterous nvidia guy, keep on going ;P
