Art should express something? Then, pray tell, what does the Mona Lisa painting express? To me it's nothing more than a very well made portrait, but still art.

as if it was possible to say whether demos (in general) are art or not - very much depends on the demo, i'd say.
and interesting sidenote: many of those who preach how demos should be have never really produced demos.

yeah well. i think we should differentiate between demos and 'code-art' ..
unless people think that they are, or should be, the same.. perhaps they should state so.
code-art is not necessarily a gfx/sound piece of code, so they are different..
on the other hand, not every gfx/sound piece of code is a demo, right?
we have three categories now.. either can be art.
code can be art, or not.
demos can be art, or not. [we all have seen some crap demos, are they not demos?]

and ask yourself: "what type of code could it need? "

thom, erm... yeah you are right. there are forms of art that don't express anything, like design :) anyway, my point is that if code is art then even some beautiful math formulas or theories might be art. maybe even some machines/devices...

There is apparently something aesthetic about code anyway, as recursive routines are often described as 'elegant'.
But it depends on the audience ofcourse. Certain 'art' can not be appreciated by everyone. Code-art is such a thing... Jazz music aswell...
It's a sort of 'educated art' I guess... An acquired taste :)
