The Gathering 2005 (yeah, I'm not easily deterred)
category: general [glöplog]
Oh, and scamp: Thanks for the vote of confidence. :) But there are actually several other sceners involved with The Gathering, besides myself: Concrete/Contraz, Neon/Nocturnal, D'arcy and Sesse/Excess, Optimize/Kvasigen, Irvin/Outracks ... to name a few. Not to forget also, that we still have people on the board from Crusaders and Cryptoburners. :)
Well, Gloom...
If you don't wish to move TG, don't wish to merge compos, don't wish to separate the scene part of TG to another date, and don't wish to hold scene compos during the first two TG days... what's the point of this thread then? In this case everything will stay the same, and working on any kind of plane/bustrip is pretty much lost work.

it's like buses. you wait ages for one, and then two come along at once.
scamp: Well, I didn't say we wouldn't try either of the options (except the moving of the party, that's out :), I just said that I don't like them very much. :)
However, I'd like do do all I can for more sceners to come to TG, so keep bringing up suggestions..

Free entrance if you dress like a girl.
gloom: i cant see how you plan to get more sceners to TG at the same time as BP - the big scene party. TG will never be a real/good sceneparty again as long as it collides with BP. sorry.
Quisten: that's total bullshit and you know it. You just have to realize that not everyone wants to roll around in german mud for a week, smelling like a bonfire, living in a tent that becomes fucked up every night by some random norwegian drunk idiot. (YES, WE FUCK UP THE MOST, but that is another topic.)
Personally I prioritize being clean and having fun with friends. I can roll around in mud and fuck up people in the summertime.
A lot of great productions are delivered at the gathering every year. It's not like the gathering gets all the crap while breakpoint gets all the good stuff.
I think the gathering is one of the best sceneparties around nowadays.
(I don't think I have a point.)

if it's allowed to drink beer inside i think there would have been a totally different issue.
irvin, you could promote the clean bathroom facilities in your tv ad then.

Ok, now i understand why people say the demoscene is dead :)
Compare TG 93 to TG 04, things have changed radically to the worse :( In 93 almost every visitor was a scener, in 04 almost every visitor was a gamer.
But the demoscene has gotten alot smaller, so i don`t blame the organizers.
I must just realize that the good old times will never happen again.

zplex: Although I wouldn't categorize The Gathering as one of the best sceneparties around (though it's faaaaaaar from the worst, that's for sure!), I think comparing TG93 to TG04 is just naive and wrong. In 1993 all parties were either demoparties or copyparties, and the copyparties were filled with demosceners too. Things evolve - live with it.
Zplex: Go find that ballroom sweater, that flock of seagulls haircut and your silly polyester blazer in that horrible colour and let's pretend it's the eighties again.
Irvin: the compo last year ruled. but it wasnt that funny hiding the whiskey we drank before and after the compo. And those anyoing shouts in the hall..... but ivar, this doesnt ruin our relationship, some simple disagreement ? i hope you`ll take me walking next time im to drunk to stand up myself :)
I don't think any kind of TG-bashing will help this thread, anyway. I can only say: If it wouldn't collide with BP, I sure would go there to make up my own mind of its quality.
FWIW - Irvin, Breakpoint 05 will be warm and clean for those who like it warm and clean, and still warm but less clean for those that don't like cleanliness. Wait for the new location/features announcement (and no, I won't disclose further details for now).

Gloom: I cant see why the remaining part would suffer if you extracted the scener part to another week/month/whatever.. It would be enough to give the two parties names like TG LAN and TG Scene to avoid it. (Note: i'm not calling it TG Game, since i guess you were afraid of loosing people if you did that). Actually i Guess you could get MORE people in there since you wouldnt have to make "space in front of the bigscreen" (which got removed in 99 remember? that was basically the last drop) and wouldnt have to let sceners get a row or two either.. you can easily sell those extra tickets to gamers and you know it damn well :) And you dont have to rent the damn vikingship for the scene part either, a smaller place would suffice... If you really want to make a demoscene party again, that's what you should do.. otherwise you'll just keep loosing people to breakpoint
I guess separating the party into two is mainly a financial issue... :S
huh? remove the single best base of scener-recruiting in the norwegian scene? bad plan.

Insert Leia's post here and pretend I said it.
I'm sorry to say this, gloom, but I think the logical option here is that the demoscene abandon The Gathering and start a new Norwegian demoparty.
I'm sure that The Gathering can continue as a party on Easter without demo compos. Seeing as they supposedly sell out of tickets every year, I'm sure ~100 more gamers would be happy to fill in those abandoned seats. True, The Party crumbled without the scene aspect, but Dreamhack has continued. It's all in the organizing, and the TG organizing seems pretty solid to me. And yes, there's Assembly.. but they've managed to retain a large scene organizing team, and luckily for them, they don't have the Breakpoint/holiday factor.
You will have to face the tough realization that The Gathering will never return to its early-90s days, and an all-demoscene Norwegian party may never fill up a Vikingship/arena sized space again. That's nothing to be sad about. It may never happen anywhere and the scene seems fairly content with that.
So yeah.. a new demoparty in Norway, not on any already-occupied holiday weekend, more serious than Solskogen and Kindergarden but not striving to be an arena party like TG. Easier said than done, of course. But it's a mission. The Germans pulled off Breakpoint and TUM, so similar devotion is required, and I know you (and the rest of the growing Norwegian scene) have it. It's times like this that tradition has to give way to action.

garg: if they cut a little on the price money and rented a smaller hall for the scene part, it wouldnt be a financial problem at all probably. the gathering itself has a good enough name to pull people there IF it shows that it's willing to do something for sceners AND it doesnt collide with breakpoint anymore. at least i would go for sure then, and probably a lot of others...
kusmas post is more interesting, i didnt think about that...
heh. phoenix: whats wrong with solskogen and kindergarden? ;)

leia: wrong? nuthin at all! just saying that they can't *all* be fun-in-the-sun drinking parties. but some should be. :)
phoenix: hear! hear!
i know it's terrible to say so, but it seems like it would be a lot easier for bp to move than tg, doesnt it.
bp seems only to need to stay at easter for tradition's sake, where as tg scene organising is stuck at easter unless they split from the lan party.
but then bp has no reason to move, other than for the sake of tg.
oh well.

phoenix: there are decent sceneparties that aren't "fun-in-the-sun/snow/mud drinking parties"?
I dont think I've ever been to one of those..
and regarding the real topic of this thread; as long as TG and BP are at approximately the same time, I think it's close to impossible to get anyone else than norwegians and a very low amount of hardcore partytravellers (i.e. truckie, some finns and maybe a lost dutchie or two) to visit both parties.
"sharing" the scenecompos through a stream from BP to TG doesnt sound like such a swell idea either. it might give the TG-sceners a feeling of just watching whats going on at "the real sceneparty"..
