Revision 2014 - April 18th to 21st

category: parties [glöplog]
I guess if you can provide the documentation that will be available at the compo way in advance (like this weekend), people might be able to "warm up" and get more familiar with what they can expect right now. Surely that could motivate some of them..?
Yeah, a shader hackathon should be more like 2 hours, but for a live performance where it's the process and not the end result 30 minutes should be fine. Just saying that it needs (mental) preparations to be interesting to look at.

Saga: Do they really need documentation though? I mean it's just Shadertoy, isn't it?

The tool will hopefully be made available at the beginning of next week. On the PCs you'll have a complete GLSL reference as a PDF file.
added on the 2014-04-05 00:09:37 by D.Fox D.Fox
As seven mentioned you should probably also have more high level reference like this page to improve the quality / get more done faster.

The tool will be just a front-end for GLSL shader compiler (with a few bonus features like an uniform buffer, contents of which will be controlled by the DJ via MIDI, and a few additional uniforms storing FFT of the currently played audio)

As such, all you need to refresh is GLSL v4 and that's about it, really. Come on, it's going to be plain fun!

Garg: well, that's what I gathered from the comments; people feeling insecure about not knowing the right stuff at the right time. If they know in advance which kind of fomulars they don't need to know by heart since they are provided in the documentation, they might get an idea what they can do with the little resources that are available.
Happy Birthday D.Fox!

Hi!

First of all - do not worry! :D

1. There's no such thing like a boss behind your shoulder feeling during the compo. No one is going to fire you. He's probably standing there holding your beer, or giving you some spoken hints about the syntax (that's not a problem).

2. Having 30 minutes rounds is good. 20 minutes are even better. Basically if you'll get to sth raymarched and animated camera then you win. But you need to control the audience. So basically update your screen frequently, rather than showing black screen, use the audio feedback. Do some VJ'ing live with the code. Entertain the crowd :). Then you will win. If you'll do rotating square with some blinkinf white flashes to the music then it will be better than raytraced sphere with constant color :). People had simple shaders that won.

3. Having no resources is so much better! First of all you create simple shaders - such that everyone will understand - for example old scool copper bars. At WeCan we thought about providing contestants with libraries. But in the end we just forgot about it... And then we realized that it works so much better! w23 who memorized fbm noise (BETWEEN ROUNDS!) had a killer tool in his arsenal and for everyone in the crowd it was insane, since it was one level better than his opponents. And this is something that crowd consisting of not coders immediately understood.

4. Of course having a commentary is really important just to explain what's happening in more constant moments. The commentator can check a code and try to guess what we are going to see next. It's quite hard sometimes :P. But it's necessary.

Hopefully this will resolve some doubts in your heads!

Question to orgas: Is there a filesize-limit for videos in the animation-compo. Just checked the scene.org-folders 2012 and there where file up too 800MB. Is this okay or are there problems while submitting?

Are there any vj's who are coming to Revison this year? We might have some spots left if you're interested. The idea is to do some vj'ing at the second stage as well.

***Still open for applications***

Hi D.Fox or whoever is in charge of hotline-2014@revision-party.net : did you get my mail from 2 april ? I can understand if the answer takes a while, I just want to be sure you got it.

Seven: we got it. To my knowledge, nobody ever tried to get a signed piece of paper from GEMA to release a registered song - so feel free to do that. I'm not sure if there's a chance of success though.
added on the 2014-04-05 22:21:45 by D.Fox D.Fox
how about a singed piece of paper?

problem is, you would have to pay GEMA to perform a song version of a GEMA permit slip, and you'd get stuck in an infinite loop type situation, and let's face it, Richie Hawtin is so old.

Gaspode : there is no sizelimit on the video files, however do keep it a manageable size for dowload.. think of the people on 56k modems :)

Maybe it would be less intimidating for coders if there was a simple template (or several) with bunch of useful things to start out with, like a well-commented raymarched ball with simple lighting or a plasma made out of fbm noise or something.
added on the 2014-04-06 11:38:53 by Preacher Preacher
It would also fix the black screen problem, since there would definitely be _something_ on the screen already.

I suggested to dfox to allow coders 128 bytes of head start code. Just enough to have a running start but not too much to avoid the bore.

*not enough to cause a major handicap.
(WTF it's too early.)

Dear airport shuttle travellers!
The buses have been assigned. Please check your assignments and contact us if you feel something is wrong!
To anyone who hasn't got a shuttle assigned: we will contact you soon whether there might be chances for shuttles for your connection at all or whether it is better to look for alternative transportation.

with everything that went wrong with the outside area this year, he'll have a hard time convincing me to even let him on the premises next year. I just got notice from the hall owners that he still hasn't finished building down all his stuff...

So will there be any new changes regarding the outside area this year?
