farewell

zorke - farewell
I'm not sure how to start this text, so I'll just plunge straight into it. As
some of you may know already, I'm leaving the demoscene. I'm not leaving
because I've had enough, and I'm not leaving because I'm no longer
interested, but rather due to some permanent changes in my personal life,
which I would prefer to keep private.
It's the end of the second year I spent in the demoscene, but believe me : I
started getting interested in this kind of thing several years before that.
Those two years have been fun, and they have given me motivation to learn and
continue learning ... for life. It was in the demoscene that I began to
actually enjoy math, and it was in the demoscene that I began to learn and
gradually perfect my programming skills. For these, I am grateful. But there
is more to life than computer screens, code, chiptunes, demos, and IRC. When
real life calls, it must always take precedence. In my case, it's a permanent
calling. I must leave.
From reading scene NFO's from the early 90's which I found on an obscure
pubstro server (in 2011! 0_o) to coding my last intro (you'll see soon!),
I believe I did devote all my time to pursuing it. I don't know whether that
was a wise decision, but that was nevertheless what I did.
Nerve, the artgroup, which I founded along with Peak, will live on. I believe
that, as long as I had been involved in the demoscene, Nerve in particular, I
had given it all that I had. But now it's time for me to move on.
I would like to thank many people for making my demoscene wandering enjoyable,
but I cannot remember them all. But here are some:
I would like to thank Peak, Mr. Eeh, Drozerix, Rebb, Elpunto, Dark Fox, Ola
Hughson, and eXOdus, the members of nerve, for joining, and I thank them in
advance for sticking with nerve when I have left. I would especially
like to thank Peak, Mr. Eeh, and Drozerix for joining Nerve when it was
only a small group, with little to offer in the way of reputation or
skill.
I would like to thank Peak particularly for being my buddy during this
time. Thanks Peak, for helping me out and encouraging me! I wouldn't have
been able to come so far if you hadn't been out there. Good luck with your
demoscene career and also in real life! <3
I would also like to thank Mr Eeh for helping out with Nerve when it was in its
budding stages, and also for being a great friend : Good luck, and take care of
yourself! <3
I would like to thank mudlord for the nice times we've had talking on irc,
for helping me out with learning C and some other problems, and also for
providing some services for Nerve.
I would like to thank wysiwtf for providing us at nerve with our nice BNCs.
and for helping our IRC chan to get started.
Thanks also go to Irokos of Titan for being encouraging and understanding,
even when I was feeling down, and also for some friendly chat :) Keep it up!
and all the best for Titan!
I would like to thank the numerous scene groups with whom I have worked
with during my career, especially RNDD. I almost forgot : I'd like
to thank MasterUploader/RNDD for giving me work to do when I was getting
started, and also for the friendly chat. Study hard man :), and good luck
with your scene career too!
Some other people I would like to give a final shout out to : iks^titan,
Jazzcat, Svenzzon, Dubmood, Rez, Preacher (for giving me some motivation),
Sheep/AGES, STN, Smanettone83, Renan, and anyone I forgot, plus RNDD, Lz0, DVT,
THETA, DJiNN, and any other groups I forgot :P
Finally, I send out a great big "THANK YOU" to everyone on the demoscene :
its a great place for geeks with an artistic flair to hang out in! May the
scene not die for many years to come.
I will probably not come back at all, but wysiwtf, if you read this far,
you might as well keep my BNC there for a year. If I don't log on at all, you
can safely assume I'm not coming back
All the best for the demoscene in the future.
Farewell
Zorke^Nerve, December 20, 2013
I guess this is also available here : http://nerve.untergrund.net/zke-farewell.txt
Farewell, Zorke. Maybe you will return one day.
If you want to quit, just quit, or maybe make a demo about it. But these huge announcements just feel so damn pointless.
It's more dramatic like this.
britelite has a good point - though i get that it would feel bad if nobody noticed your absence.
Sorry, i was too busy not caring.
If you quit too early, nobody will notice your absence either.
Strange that demoparties are not mentioned. I wonder how many demosceners he met face to face.

Yeah, a goodbye demo would be great https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=10456
ha damn, that kind of news are still a bit sad.
btw for me demoscene is more "real life" than the life itself :D
well, i take this news more like a "brb" than a sad "farewell", you know, nobody never quit the demoscene for real :D

code is way cooler than IRL btw
I tried that "real life" outside the demoscene during the period 1996-2004 or so.. my most booring time EVER
seen*
I'm not going anywhere, but I'd like to thank everybody for everything. I've had a good time, and I particularly enjoyed State of the Art, Extension, Second Reality and Dope.
or not, there are just much less threads of that case so i cannot link them so convincingly :(
i also totally second yzi

Check my post again. I found four. I stopped looking around page 50 or something in the BBS thread history. I passed a few dead people threads* and a few looking for people of interest / geographical area.
* :(
However even if there were more such threads, I'm not sure it necessarily change anyone's mind who decided to go (especially if there's good reasons why don't know) ... However I think it sort of proves you can check out of the demoscene any time you like, but you can't ever leave! ;)

@Zorke,
Not that you don't already know, but I think it should be obvious you're welcome back at any time. :)
Maybe show up at a demoparty in a few years, even if only for a few hours, surprise some people, and share a beer. ;)
Good luck on your new ventures.
I also tried to quit. Even did a goodbye demo. Look what happened :)
No one can quit the scene. You may try, but you won´t succeed.
Can't you just quit the scene between releases? That, and coming back with a "<group> dead? pah!" demo is how it's always been done ;)
It's like trying to quit smoking. You quit when you finish one cigarette, but start smoking again 10 minutes later!
Epic. Maybe a demo about quitting? Damn, I am a scener for over 20 years. Should I quit now to much more famous or so?
As T$ said above.
Is it really necessary to write a whole wall of text just to say you're gonna be out of the scene for some time, after only 2 years on it? I don't really get this.
Anyway, here's my token of attention. Now good luck on your personal life. I'll keep on carrying on mine.

Nobody ever really "quits" the scene. They just fade away.
Posting these kinds of things is just attention-seeking. And attention-seeking is what the scene is all about, really.
