I just finished reading a (probably now embarrassing) interview with Smash by Crown of Cryptoburners. Smash, is it actually true that as late as 2001 you were not actively coding? When did you actually begin, and how did you really get going with it? It seems mind-blowing, what can be accomplished in so little time.

What about the rest of you? How did you guys pick up these skills?

I copied all those listings on my Amstrad CPC without working floppy nor tape drive. Each time I wanted to play a game.

I have been coding since I was five years old and me and my brothers got the C64. Never stopped at almost any point, just progressed to other platforms gradually and mostly just self-learned as I went on without any connections to sceners or coders per se before ~2004 when I was already 19.

When I finally got my first computer (after years of nagging, really), a c64, I thought the machine was broken. For some reason I was convinced the "input" command was spelled "imput", and so I was flabbergasted that the damn thing didn't know this clearly important BASIC command. WTF. :D

So yeah, trial and error was/is a big part of it. :)
