Amiga - native Paula sound

category: general [glöplog]
Generally I use Dumb for foobar also, as it's my main audio player it's just easier.. but for anything specific and other custom formats i'll use XMPlay or a real amiga :)

I specifically need something that can play MOD, S3M, XM and IT, very well indeed, to a WAV file - do any of those do so? Also, I heard DeliTracker's output was mono for WAVs.

I also need such a utility that can loop MODs a specified number of times, and with nice smooth fadeouts at the end - this WinAmp plugin I've used that many people hate does that, and I heard that Oldskool does not.

xmplay can output to wav if I remember well...

Yep, XMPlay was good but I went back to Deliplayer and used dedicated ones for the other stuff.

XMPlay does exactly what you want - you can specify custom interpolation, fadeout and loop amount settings for every module. And it's a good player for streamed formats, too.
Thank you, Saga Musix.

Is there a website that lists all the mods ever made for Amiga, and which prods they were used in? I know the prods, you see, but not the mods used in them.

There is no such thing as a single centralized database to hold all of this information, but Bitfellas and Necarine are a good place to start if you need the mod/demo assocations.
Well, this website may help you with that. Look at the "Release Features" section. Of course I'm just linking to Enigma to show you what their prod page looks like, but you can use the search box on the right to look for prods and the music that was used in them.

Back in the day my left and right speakers were several meters apart, which made the Paula stereo really noticeable. Thats why I just half-unplugged one of the cinch plugs from the sockets of my A500 and thus got mono in hardware.

Thank you all!

As of now, XMPlay replaces WinAmp and it's average plug-in as my MOD player of choice!

I'm still undecided about the stereo, though. I'd have to redo dozens of MP3s, and it tool long enough to record them in the first place.

XMplay works quite good, when I render music to MP3 for listening on the go, I use 25 % seperation.

Any ideas of adding more channels to the amiga don't make sense in my opinion. PC's are good for something. Amiga Music is MOD, 4 channels, 32 samples. Clear competition.

Well, ok, AHX is pretty cool, too. And Hively. And...

At Revision we normally use 25-50% separation for classic Amiga stuff because the speakers are so far apart from each other that people at the far sides of the hall only hear two of the channels and the people in the middle get their brains stretched out by the sheer stereoness (seems "actual size" isn't always good ;).

Of course this doesn't apply for prods with streamed 14bit music - and that's why you really should check those stereo separation checkboxes in the entry upload forms. We orgas tend to fuck shit up.

I'm curious about this 14bit thing btw. I'm guessing it's combining the 2 left/right channels to make single left/right channels. But I can only see that giving 9 or 16bit - where does the 14 come from?

psonice: 8 + 6 bit (due to using the lowest of 64 volume levels)
Foebane72: Modland Search
amp.dascene.net for that musician fetish
and Kestra-Bitworld v2 for that demo that had that ace tune... :)

What's this interpolation I keep hearing about? When I try it out, it seems to make things sound better, but is it any longer Amiga sound when you do that? I thought the odd crackle and the distinctive noise you get at lower frequencies was part of the charm of the machine.

On my Amiga1200 I usually pull out one of the phono cables on the back. If only one is connected, all channels will be mixed and output on the connected phono cable.

For me the .wav-output in OpenMPT works quite fine until now. At first I tended to export it in Mono for avoiding seperation, but if you use the 888 command in the first pattern in every channel before exporting, the result works for me fine.

My latest mixtape was made using these wav-files:

No-one's answered my question: what does interpolation do to Amiga sound?

Can't you just check it by yourself? If you see a charm in 'odd crackles' then go for it. The sound won't change only because someone explained it to you.

In other words, use whichever settings sound best to you. Also, thanks to Saga I found out that in XMplay you can store different settings for each module file, how handy is that!
Just check Options -> Saved Settings.

It depends on each module. Interpolation tries to improve the 8 bit samples using a cheap trick. It could work or, if not, could muffle the sound.

In general, avoid interpolation in chiptunes cause it could ruin the sound (loss of hi-freq) but try it in another mods and decide for yourself if it sound better.

And never use crappy WinAmp! XMPlay is way better for MOD music. You can try the surround modes for MODs that XMPlay provides. Surround + stereo mixing at 30% or 40% can improve a lot how it sound on earphones. Anyway, as some people pointed before, you can render each instrument separately and do the mix properly in your favourite DAW.
