I totally agree it shouldn't be encouraged. But, realistically, there are some platforms pretty much all of us watch purely on youtube :) It'd be nice to have as an option (disabled by default, you enable it per platform).

E.g. I can't watch 99% of PC/linux demos. I *only* watch the videos, usually on youtube, so it would be a win here. Dos on the other hand, I usually watch in dosbox, so i don't want it. C64, I usually watch on youtube, and on emulator if it looks really good, it's a win again.

And yeah, I know there's an easy youtube button. I also know there are way too many tempting distractions on the actual youtube page ;)

"pretty much all of us" => "I can't" - nice try ;)

psonice: use poi's youtube script.
The image quality is (almost) always better on hardware, but beyond that I don't see why it would really matter. For me it's kind of enough to know that some computer somewhere can run the program - a double click on a .exe instead a single click on a youtube video and a different level of GPU fan noise doesn't change my experience much :)

Maybe if I had some older hardware to run demos on it might be a bigger difference.

(not in favor of changing anything though, the current link thing works very nicely)

gargaj: well, realistically most of us here don't have most of the platforms listed on pouet. We physically can't watch a huge amount of prods outside of a video or emulator, and even setting up an emulator can be a huge amount of learning and messing around. And it's still not watching it how it's meant to be seen.

So, either you watch on youtube, or you set up emulators for lots of platforms, or you miss out :) I bet the "pretty much all of us" is pretty accurate. (And remember I'm talking here about the platforms we don't own.)

Maali: i'll have a look at that, but I'll only use it if I can set it by platform.. otherwise the temptation is too big to skip the realtime version :D

Good work. We all ♥ it! (:

psonice: Compared to the config.sys fuckery you had to endure in the '90s, demowatching has become almost obvious, and I'll pick an emulator above a YouTube capture any day. Seriously, make an effort.

when it's a platform i don't know much about, and I'm more curious to see what people made, and there's a fairly high chance I'll have to figure out some obscure command to get the demo to load? I appreciate that I should make the effort, but honestly, that's time I could spend actually making a demo, so in reality I watch a decent (hopefully from hardware, which is probably better anyway) capture.

And PC demos? Good luck getting smash's latest code running on an emulator on any kind of equipment that doesn't come in large racks :D And yeah, sure, I *could* put windows on this box, but that would mean buying a windows license and losing days configuring shit :(

So much for open source ;) Dictatorship FTW

gargaj: as a compromise - why not make it a user setting if people want to have it?

Why not make a pull request about it? Or better make a demo, Evoke is this weekend.
D.fox/saga: yeah, pull request is the best way to request a feature now :D But if there's lots of people against it, leave it alone :)

saga: sundown next month is pushing it time wise already :/

I'm with psonice.. unfortunately it is youtube caps ftw

I consume more demo's via youtube flicking through new releases or browsing groups etc in my lunchbreak on my laptop then any other way. I casually browse using an iPad on the sofa while the mrs watches rubbish on tv.

#Gargaj is a member of #mandarine?

And while we're here with feature requests: Autolink User/Group/Prodnames with prepended #

(I would do it myself if I knew how to make a pull request, knew how to code, blahblah.. okay, being a sofa-scener I might even have some spare time to learn)

What win? It's "click the play button" vs "click the youtube link". I don't see how one is better than the other.

I agree with G here, a link to youtube is good enough.

Also:
- The screenshots are hosted by pouet, which is good, I don't think it's a good idea for any pouet content to depend on a bunch of 3rd party youtube accounts.
- The screenshots could evolve, heck the format has been established in 2000 when 4/3 and SVGA was the norm. I think a system with multiple screenshots or like vine could be allowed:
1. multiple sshots could be uploaded and you could see each of them by moving th mouse over the screenshot
2. we could allow a vine-like video: no flash, just an open format (webm?) of 6s max with sound that would only play on mouseover to give an animated overview of the demo.

Just my 2c.

The difference between the current situation (youtube links on prod pages) and your proposed alternative (youtube embeds on prod pages) is literally one click, if you're not willing to make the effort to watch it on the real hardware/an emulator. I doubt the time spent making that extra click will cut into your demo-making time much.

also to embed yt directly would totally kill alternative approaches like capped.tv (which is miles ahead of YT in terms of demoquality. btw...)

i forgot to mention dhs.nu which has excellent atari captures.
anyway, i prefer emulators for the more common oldschool platforms, but ironically there are many perfectionists among those sceners who prefer video captures from the original hardware.
i guess you can never make it right for everyone...

It's not an extra click either, just a click slightly to the side.

Even I remember times when demos that ran shitty on your puter meant that, well, your PC is shitty. I actually find it demotivating to hear such things, the few people who try to break boundaries are rewarded with "didn't run on my netbook LOL".

I don't know about you, but there's a reason I code demos instead of making animations, I want to see how fast an unrolled, optimized loop runs on a machine that still starts to sweat at 50mb GIFs.

Consider me pissed, that some of you people seem to not find the time to download an emulator were it took the people weeks to finish their prod to be consumed by you as youtube vid. I see the point in prods from LFT, but you can't tell me it's that hard to drag and drop a demo into an Amiga emulator.

On that matter, it's still funny to see prods that come with yt right away, and somewhere around the 10th comment people start to notice the demo doesn't run at all.

/rant

tl;dr Vimeo has an art scene, go consume it.

Click play button, watch demo, go back to making new demo.

--or--

Click youtube link, click play, watch demo. See amusing cat. Watch cat videos for a couple of hours. Go to bed.

That win :)

I pretty much agree, and I guess you missed the bit that said I don't have a windows box. I can't really justify one either, considering the time and cost of keeping it running and up to date. Like I said, running the latest fairlight demo on an emulator isn't exactly viable :D

It's not really clear cut that watching realtime is actually better than the video though. I mean, is it better to watch the latest fairlight demo at 1080p 30fps, or 640p 15fps realtime? You could spend a ton of money and watch it 'properly', but that's hard to justify if it's once a year and only used to watch a couple of demos.

Also, emulators for older stuff sometimes don't run the demo the way they should. It's better on real hardware, and ideally you want to watch on a CRT. A quality video capture can indeed be better than an emulator :)

Yeah, they should be ahead of youtube anyway :) There are also some online emulators too, which might be an interesting option.

Yeah, even *if* we'd ever do some kind of embed shit, then I'd rather see something like Capped.tv rather than YouTube.

But then again, I didn't put money into a decent PC to watch video captures.
