DGC Party 1996?
category: parties [glöplog]
Can anyone, particularly the Danes, help me on this one? I found such a file on some old BBS backups while sorting them for scene.org:

What was this DGC party? IT was most likely a Danish party, judging some of the MOD texts and also the BBS adverts in the .lha file being almost exclusively Danish. Is it possible that it's some sort of predecessor of The Copenhagen Party that took place in 1997, because of [http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=29473]this[/url]?
Any info would be appreciated, because obviously I want this file go to into the scene.org archive, but I'd like to have some info on the party.
Thanks!
I know for sure, that DGC was an abreviation for "Dansk Gruppe af Computerfreaks" (Danish Group of Computerfreaks) and that they were this odd collection of people.
Having organized a (world's one and only?!?) week long party in 95 and 96 called Mulleparty which had 30-40 visitors, me and the two other organizers of that, decided to scale up in '97. We aimed for 500+ people and moved from a gym hall to using an entire school. That party was called The Copenhagen Party or simply TCP. We soon realised, that organizing a party that size required WAY more manpower than the three of us could provide, so we looked around and found this strange group of people. They seemed to have some experience in organizing parties, so we teamed up with them. That's probably the biggest mistake we ever made! They completely turned an awesome demoparty into a total circus with lotteries, strange concepts and competitions not even remotely related to the demoscene.
Well - the party was held, and there were around 450-500 participants. Groups could pay an extra fee and have their very own classroom for the entire week. The main hall had around 250-300 people sitting at tables. We had a rather large BNC-network, and the compos were so-so. The local pizzaria brought one of their ovens and we thus had a real pizzaria at the party place. Some things worked out nicely, but I think pretty much every one agrees, that the people from DGC were in NO way sceners in the sense that they knew anything about compos, productions and what was required for sceners to have a good time.
The party closed with a minor negative balance, which was split up between all organizers, so it's wasn't that bad. After that experience, me, and the other two founding organizers decided, that we wouldn't ever again be associated with DGC in any way. Therefore, the party died, even though I actually think the concept was quite awesome with the possibility for group-rooms yet a large main hall. People could sleep in their group classroom and sit in the main hall whenever they wanted. And the fact that it was a week long, actually made it possible to create quite good entries for compos at the party.
Not sure that concept would work out today (at least not the 7 day duration) with people having jobs, families and other interests as well, but perhaps some time in the future, there will be a party in the Danish capital once again ;)

Depth released a party-prod that pretty much sums up how they felt about the DGC organizing crew: DGC-Karaoke
Punqtured, thanks a lot!
So, DCG-Party 1996 was a party on its own right and is not identical to Mulle or any other party on scene.org?

To clarify - you're asking about '95 and '96. TCP was in '97, but we heard about them having organized parties before (probably those you're talking about)
(The concept sounds pretty awesome btw)
Well, the compo files in question are obviously from 1996 - see the (broken) file_id.diz above.
And no, Mulleparty wasn't in any way associated with DGC. They must have held some parties prior to '97 just like I did. Mulleparty was held in '95 and '96 too, though, but had nothing to do with DGC at all, though.
But also speaking of Mulle '96 - did you know that apparently no compo files survived apart from a fastmusic entry? http://www.scene.org/dir.php?dir=%2Fparties%2F1996%2Fmulle96/ -- so, if you've got any backups (and most importantly the results) left, we at scene.org would be very thankful!
Also no files left from Mulle '95.
It's quite some years ago now, but if I recall correctly, none of the Mulleparties had compos at all. '96 was served as a one-week warm-up for the South Sealand party. We had a small cinema, running movies 24/7 from Laserdiscs on a rather large surround system in one part of the gym hall. In '95 (I think) the movie "Striptease" premiered, and we decided to hire a stripper to perform prior to showing the movie. That's probably the WIERDEST job she'd EVER had. A bunch of 13-20 year old geeks, most having never seen a naked woman before, suddenly in the middle of a live strip show :D Now THERE'S a moment I'll never forget! :D
Hahaha ok. Thanks for clarifying! =)
But at least there apparently was a fastmusic compo in 1996?

Mind if I link your post about Mulleparty to the appropriate party entry at Demozoo?
Sadly, my Amiga was stolen back in early 2000's, and with it - whatever files might have been from those parties (as well as 8-10 years worth of my music, that wasn't backed up). I don't think there were any actual compos at the Mulleparties, but perhaps a fast music compo was held one of the years. If you've got an entry saying it was from a fast music compo, that's probably the case ;)
For the only entry, see the scene.org link above. :P
I think I found it on the backups of Equalizer BBS.

Please feel free to connect any dots that might turn up, Dipswitch. It would actually be fun to see what you've managed to find :D
Sometimes I wish my PhD, which I have to finish writing up now, was about demoscene history... :P
In any case, here are the DGC entries: http://www.scene.org/file.php?file=%2Fparties%2F1996%2Fdgc96%2Fmisc%2Fdgcp96.lha&fileinfo
Thanks for help!

Punqtured: Haha, those are some really awesome stories (apart from the Amiga being stolen thing, of course)! :D
I visited the "famous" DGC party in '97, but only went for an hour or so, since I was only visiting Copenhagen.
I remember having to argue with the infodesk for a looooong time about paying the full week for getting in to say hi to a few people for an hour or so.
I remember the infodesk having a HUUUGE stack of "confiscated goods" (you were not allowed to bring ANYTHING (food, drinks, whatever) from the outside into the party...
I remember people lifting up groceries via ropes through the windows in the building to avoid getting stuff confiscated :)
Actually this was the first real party I ever visited, even though it was only for 1-2 hours :)

As punqtured mentioned, there was a lottery, and the main price was a pretty stoked out Amiga 1200. The lottery was not really something the attendees were interested in, and by the time the party was drawing to a close, the main DGC organizer had figured this out. He'd realized that he could get his hands on that Amiga 1200 pretty easy. So he bought up enough lottery tickets to put the odds overwhelmingly in his favor (still fairly cheap for him, no one else was buying), went up on stage - and drew his own name out of a bowl, getting a cheap, new Amiga 1200 for a couple of minutes work and a bit of cash. To quite a crowd of boos.
All of problems with DGC organizers aside, this was a really amazing party.
The main hall was big, had an amazingly high ceiling, beautifully curved staircases and landings (a bit like atrium) along the walls. And we felt pretty elite, sitting in our classrooms.
We (Fnuque) shared a room with Focus Design, Loonies and Efreet. IRIS was right next door, and Depth were a couple of doors over. I really learned a lot talking to people that week :-)

a week longs party.. :) what a marvellous idea! must've been fucking exhaustive tho - both for the visitors and esp. for the orgas. somethimes i wish i was older... or danish.. no, wait. XD
LOL, yeah, that's the DGC main organizer in a nut!!! shell :-D
If I'm not mistaken, he won several of the secondary prizes in the lottery as well. But WTF?! better prizes in a freakin' lottery than in the compos?! We (the three founders) had some serious arguments with DGC over this. But since they provided sponsers, there was little we could do about it.
But I agree with revival, that the venue was absolutely amazing. I'll see if I can dig up some pictures of it ;)

Main hall. People were sitting in the aula as well as all the way around the balconies. From the balcony, there was access to the classrooms, where groups had their bases for the entire week ;)
Haven't been able to find pictures from the actual party, but here's another one from the main hall during some kind of event.

Holy hell, that was a long time ago, I was at that party alongside neptun, and man, the organizers (or, Organazis, as we called them) were so strict and controlling that you would not believe it.
But, this just created an atmosphere of adversity, and it ended up being a fantastic party, fun and very productive. (Neptun linked our production above)
I'm not sure I have any photos, but I do have a bit of raw video from our wild production, and also, I think, a taping of the entire wild competition.
