fix me beautifull
category: general [glöplog]
Depends. All the prod page links were always outgoing (originally to files only, then youtube was ok, but not vimeo, then basically any number of random external web content was added). But now, even the external rule is gone, so it's just a heap of links to whatever now. More inconsistency and site rot. :P
many thanks
tomaes: what alk and lotek said. this is a link to some text, hosted on the same server. ok, it's just beside the screenshot and this area uses to be external links. :) fundamentally talking, it's just an area and that's about it, you know? :)
sure, but I guess having some "external link pointing everywhere" for prods is not that clean in the codebase, and may stop future improvements on this side...
uses to show external links*
*for codebase read database as well* sure
the last time i checked in, adding vimeo links or links to stuff that exists only on a webserver was still a big no-no, and as far as i care, it still is. linking to a bbs thread, even if it is a very interesting one like the one presented on the previous page, is, as tomaes said, another form of site rot. i'm disappointed to see glöperators use the "but if X is allowed, why isn't Y allowed" argument, you of all people should know better than that...

havoc, i don't get you here. you're saying that having stuff in that beside screenshot area pointing to external servers always has been forbidden?
this following question doesn't have to be taken as the following of the previous question bur rather a reply to the chance i've got that the reply to my question is a "yes".
in this case, any prod being only on e.g. scene.org would bow to the same rule?
that's a definite impossible thing, i guess i just don't understand what you say.

so you mean that having people linking the picture of the thumbup as a comment is forbidden too, or is it because it's in the specified area we're talking about?
And well, I don't know much at webserver coding, but if it's forbidden, just forbid it?
I guess it's doable, right?
Rethorical question.
Well, i just don't understand why all of that arguing for not so much thing. I'm surely naive about that rule, and that's why i keep pushing in my direction of being all like "dudes, it's okay, why do we care?" - and i really ain't talking as a "titan member" here, just as a long time pouet user and community lover. We know pouet is a mess. It always will be and noone will ever take the responsibility to fix it all completely for us to feel better about something we'll like less because we just won't be able to argue about it. We're just human beings arguing about stuff instead of accepting the fact that if we come on this site or if we do what we do, we do it because we love it the way it is.
@Irokos: To answer your question... YES it's doable. I could easily do it... but then I would get private "WTF" E-Mails from other Glöperators about it! (... and Havoc... NO, I DO NOT BACK-READ dozens of old fix-me-beautiful-pages... why should I? I guess you don't do that either).
Imho many of the rules on pouet are well... let's say outdated. If somebody comes up with a new idea or does something a different way the reaction is always "ANTI". Flexibility is nothing you should expect from Pouet and his inhabitants.
@Tomaes: Sorry for my lameness but why is this a "work-around"?. I simply cannot see HOW site-linking inside the same site does make a site rot... btw what ALK said.

In my opinion, it's mostly a matter of consistency. Or maybe it's just the coder part of my brain that finds spaghetti code/linking to be wrong from a purely structural point of view. For what it's a work-around? A csdb-like feature (where you have a trivia, goof, summary/info page for each prod.). I don't know, if similar things are being considered for pouet 2.0 or not, but it might be worth having a separate info page for compatibility / trivia / hidden parts / making-of style stuff in a similar manner. That would be the way to do it. So far, there's only room for a single nfo file, which is rather limited. To link back to a BBS thread is really just a half-measure, a temporary work-around for something that should be an integrated feature of pouet's prod pages. And someday all these inconsistencies need to be fixed again.
The other point is fragmentation of information & discussion. Now you have effectively two different threads in two completely different places of pouet, discussing the same thing (each from a different perspective mostly, but still) twice.

wsw: It's not on pouet, but it's on csdb. Feel free to add it yourself.

irokos, what i was saying is that a) the rule used to be that we didn't add video links to sites other than youtube and demoscene specific videosites, and b) the "download" link should point to a download, not a website or online video.
lotek, i don't know what you're talking about.
in general: doing something just "because you can" is probably an even worse argument than "doing X because Y is also allowed". but hey, if you insist on screwing up this site even further, go right ahead, who's stopping you anyway, eh?

@Havoc: maybe a look into your e-mail-outbox refreshes your memory.
