ASSEMBLY Summer 2012
category: parties [glöplog]

- I really miss the category introductions by sceners. I loved that part in the first couple of ceremonies.
Must agree with this, though then again it might be difficult to find new people to present them or to have something new to say about them.
Also, while assembly really isn't a proper demoparty anymore, it certainly still is a scene-related event.
gloom: brilliant!
How is it not a "proper" demoparty? What was the last year it was a "proper" demoparty?
yzi: I'm guessing he means "demoscene only". Like The Gathering and Dreamhack, Assembly is a "hybrid" event.
Well, I think of it this way: Assembly contains a proper demoparty. There are lots of other stuff as well though.
Yzi: I agree with that, and actually kinda meant that with what I said; it has a demoparty, but the entire event as a whole really isn't a "proper" one.
mind you there's also the whole resources thing. Meeting the organizational, infrastructural (stream, ppl coming over, stage, etc) and financial and what not thingamabobs that come with holding an event like the scene awards doesn't make picking an alternative party THAT simple as you make it seem.

I honestly believe that part of the job of jury is to balance. If Smash needs a new apartment to store all that metal, maybe it would be more interesting to diversify.
i just really think the awards need to be judged as a whole, not category by category. if you consider categories in isolation you end up with a situation where, hypothetically, two demos are very evenly matched but one demo just beats the other by a small margin in 4 categories, winning 4 to the other's 0.
you need a proper phase after the final round of voting where the jury is told the winners, there is a big debate and you smooth out the results. keep giving that one demo the categories where it really stood out or the major "best demo" award, but give one or two of the more minor awards (say, the separate discipline categories) to the other one or something else entirely.
you also gotta look at the voting method. ive seen it too often that the awards go to "the best demo with an alright soundtrack" or "the best demo with alright direction", not "the demo which had an amazing soundtrack even tho everything else was shit", because it's the average of a (relatively small) number of people's opinions. there arent enough people in the jury to make the voting system currently in use work (without post-processing the results :) ).
imo this should go in one of two ways: 1. the awards is the result of the opinions of a small number of (vocal, opinionated) scene experts who debate and come up with an agreement on a set of winners that "feels good" as a whole. 2. the awards is voted for in a system more like publics choice, but where the people who are allowed to vote is preselected and limited to say, 200. thats a bit like how e.g. the games developers choice or bafta awards work; they have a list of "most influential games industry people" and invite them directly to vote on the preselected shortlist for each category. with that many people voting you'd hopefully convolve to a good set of results.
The best coders team up with the best musicians and so on.
Each year, you will have 4-5 productions which have excellent effects, an excellent soundtrack, excellent graphics & an excellent direction alltogether, and deserve many awards (it's the same with the oscars).
Either you deal with it.
Either you change the category in "best graphics/soundtrack/direction in a demo which was not nomited as best demo" (meh..).
Either you drop the categories, and take this as an opportunity to introduce things as "best oldschool intro", "best animation", ...

Was a fun party, with a nice surprise for us at the end (pyrotech getting 2nd)
While assembly isn't a proper demoparty anymore, it's the only party where we can struggle to participate. The timing is perfect for summer holidays (too bad for wives and kids) and it happens at our doorstep. We've had hopes and dreams to go to other parties (out of Finland), but it's just not feasible. Without a prod we might not come to asm either.
Grats to CNCD it was really nice demo, but maybe Division should have won.

As I've said many times before, the best thing about the scene.org awards is the fact it gives you a list of nominations so you can see demos you missed throughout the year. If I know someone is into a more music-oriented demo, or into a more graphics-oriented demo, I'll look at the list from the last few years and recommend them something out of those nominations.
Without the nominations, I'd have never seen a skateboarder sliding down a track to the tune of Dolly Parton...

the nominations list i thought was pretty good actually.. there wasnt _that_ many good prods to choose from last year so it was pretty conclusive.
No offense meant (seriously congratulations) but if you want the next scene.org awards to be more fair/even prevent that someone has more than 1 nominee per category.
inertia: so the nominees in best demo will have mediocre soundtrack, mediocre graphics, mediocre direction and mediocre effects? might as well give it directly to Rebels then... :)
mediocre is the new awesome :o

Kuzma suggested to split the jury into groups that can judge a certain category.
Agreed. e.g. technical achievements should be judged by people who can decide what is technically outstanding.

- I would definitely move the award ceremony to a scene-related event (which Assembly is not (anymore)).
Yes.

- It's nice to try something new, but adding "funny" non-sceners turns out to be risky.
That guy was horrible. Scenesat saved the situation by playing music (huge thanks for that).

- I think the diplomas looked kind of cheesy (sorry), but why not 3d-print little statues for the nominees as well?
We talked about that at evoke - didn't we? Seconded. In case 3d-print is too expensive - print some cut & fold stuff + some free glue (DIY statues)! ;)
Plus - I agree on the results postprocessing idea and the general procedure smash recommends.
Oh and I also want to mention that dropping the 64k compo in favor of 1k was a terrible idea. The 1k compo was kinda horrible imho.
I'd imagine a decent 64k is easier to make than a decent 1k. From a "fun to watch" -perspective, not a technical one.
And the comedy guy in the awards could've saved everything with this line :)

@Maali: Yes, Demos were chosen well this year. But...

Did noone else step up or are they just that far ahead of the competition? This somehow looks odd.
P.S: Smash's second suggestion creating a whitelist with the hard core and have them vote the awards directly deserves a bump.
