What's wrong with piracy?

Okay, I'm going to get in trouble for this, but my view was always to pay for software that I actually used. Do I have tons of pirated software? Of course I do; I'm a oldskool scener (oldskool sceners know what I mean). But I only pirate software that I would never ever pay for (meaning, that I would never use). I have lots of pirated games, but I have 600+ real retail box games as well. I have pirated versions of Windows, but all my machines run a real paid retail copy of Windows XP Pro (even the ones I built myself).
Piracy has always existed. It's stuck to the computer industry.
So, there is nothing to do.
As a citizen and computer scientist, I buy the products I need and (often) use.
When you are completely satisfied with a product which deserves to go further, it's the best way to support it.
BUT I need to say that the registration process is something virtual, especially when you order your products online. You just feel like giving your money to a company without getting something except an account on a dark server somewhere and a password you can lost.
So, there is nothing to do.

I think it's okay to warez software as long as the software was produced in India/Asia etc since the programmers there doesnt live in big houses that costs shitloads of money to serve.

The biggest threat to open source, freeware and small-scale developers is called piracy. Someone here mentioned 3D Studio, and how many demos wouldn't have been produced had it not been possible to pirate that particular application.
My point is, that alternatives do exist, but because you can just as well pirate Photoshop (cover price €700) for exactly 0€, no-one will ever register Paintshop pro, since it is perceived as a runner-up, inferior, non-standard, and so on. But as a matter of fact, in most instances, it will do the job just as well, and if it lacks features, those are features which could have been added would people have bought that instead of pirating Photoshop.
Pirating pro-grade, industry standard tools is killing competition and opportunities for individual programmers or small companies to carve out a niche, since it levels the cost-driven playfield which would otherwise favour a greater diversity in an ideal, capitalistic biotope.

Rather, it has gone into supporting programmers in their endeavour to further develop their programs, or given them funds to buy food, beer or socks.

trying to enforce impossible laws seems completly ridicolous to me.

ofcourse, since programmers, musicians, writers etc, just like starving people in third world countries, need food to survive, be sure to send some of them your donations from time to time..

i don't really see how being an "oldschool scener" really relates to archiving newschool software. However, I DO see how being a computer geek does. ;)

This is a tedious topic...in the end you should know by yourself what kind of pirated software is "ok" to use and which not. In my case...i dont want commercial music for example, cause it's shit, i usually support artits i downloaded stuff from and found to be good by buying their stuff or going to a concert. on the other hand smaller, underground bands (you don't have to think very small - think Slayer e.g.) who don't have endorsement deals to major corporations or anything like that might get hurt more by copying an album...

As far as I know, the most money you pay for a music CD does not reach the composer, but goes to the producer, publisher, etc.. Basically, those people that do not produce but rather publish things get rich. I once heard that even when you pay one dollar/euro using iTunes, the composer only gets sth. like 7-8 cents. If you want to really support the creators, it would make more sense to make an "unlicensed copy" and send them some money rather than to buy the CD legally.

I'm not stupid, so I prefer not to be made money out of. But I also refuse to be an asshole, so I don't warez stuff. I think we're missing the obvious problem, that of getting wet when you fall off the ship. And if you can't swim, you are SO screwed. And if you can't swim with an anchor attached, well, you're just really screwed.
