as far as layout / etc goes, i initially want pouet2 to look and feel exactly like pouet1 as a start - but have a clean shiny engine under it that i'm not afraid or disgusted to touch. having recently ported scene.hu from e107 to wordpress, i can tell you it makes a world of difference as far as motivation goes when adding new stuff - e107 (like the pouet code, it's a complete catastrophe) i was hesitant to touch, while with WP i know i can just work on a theme/plugin level and keep my work relatively clean from the rest. my aim is that for the development to become _convenient_ and _worthwhile_ instead of bolting on shit that immediately becomes an inseparable part.

let's instead debate my favorite flogging horse: "seamless embedding of youtube/vimeo". sure, hella convenient, but do we REALLY want people to watch demos in realtime even less? hell, we might as well remove the download links as far as i can see the trend.

tl;dr

Just for a tiny part of the site:
I vote for a "run in online emulator" feature (at least for platforms nobody has the either hardware for or the possiblity to run homebrew on (at the least GB, GBC and NES/SNES work in JS emulators atm). Good for demos, but primarily musicdisks and such and saves the need for videos...
Though it needs some work (mainly client side unzip/unrar) it is already there on wurstcaptures and I'd be willing to contribute to pouet, as I said before...

Also <3 to Gargaj for all the work.

The more features you have, the more self-maintainability you need. I don't want to imagine what a detailed credit system would do to the "fix me beautiful" thread.

e107 is absolutely terrible :) afaik bitfellas is also based on e107.

tomaes: obviously in that case the fix me beautiful thread should be replaced with a proper gloperationization interface, but i'm guessing that's in the works anyway.

why not make the credit system user edited, but before the changes take effect to be confirmed/reviewed by a gloperator first?

i would propose this: user who submits the prod can edit links, credits etc, and can choose who else can edit. either, groups who were part of the making, everyone or gloperators only, since gloperators always can, or he can name a few selected trusties/partners, in case a contributer to the demo wastn part of any group. now that would allow some angry scener to remove himself from all his prods or vandalize, you just gotta take that into consideration.

thats how fotosubmissions are handled on streetfiles.org and it seems to work, but i generally dont like the idea, nor the workload that comes with it

everything will be handled in due time. you go worry about your demos first.

Make it an account setting maybe? I don't have a windows box at all anymore, so 95% of my demo watching is youtube. I'm sure there are more in the same boat, and for us that embedded youtube video is pure win. (And yes, anything I can run realtime I do run realtime :)

so how do you separate the mac-stranded from the lazy shits?
added on the 2012-03-20 18:16:01 by Gargaj Gargaj
total negligible fact: i was a heavy youtube-watcher too, until i got my new machine :D now it's the pure joy to run everything in full framerate :D
if people prefer to watch buffering blocky videos at half-framerate, let them.. but there are also enough people out there without new windows-machines who are in need of videos..

pouet should provide all the ways to see a certain prod, and the viewer should be able to choose whether it's then the original on c-64, running from emulator or watching from youtube or in a little better quality from capped.tv or something.
having an easy access to demos will make it easier for new people to find them and get interested.

i never thought i would ever say this: i totally agree with nosfe! :D

Apart from that: Yeah, one additional click on the YT link instead of playing the video on site will certainly convert hordes of lazy sofasceners into productivity monsters. I can totally see that.

we're talking about the principle here.

I would never watch non-pc stuff if it werent for yt
psonice, meanwhile you can write a greasemonkey script, to embed yt, i guess, if you are using Firefox.

What nosfe said. I think the potential gain from random people being able to stumble upon a Pouet page and go "what the hell is this? I don't know, but that looks like a youtube video *clicky* oh, that's neat, I should find out more about this" is far bigger than the potential loss from people who would have clicked the download link but were seduced by the big shiny play icon instead.

if there's no youtubing available, a number of people will simply just not watch the production. having an embedded player vs having a link doesn't make a difference.

i have a hunch that the percentage of people who would most likely just skip a demo if it's not accessible easily enough (in their terms) is bigger among guest users (that is, those without an account). and no, waiting for a hd video to download isn't easy enough. and regarding pc demos, those people are more likely to not have the hardware to run the exe anyway. whether or not you want to cater for those people is of course another thing :)

i'd also imagine that for a number of people a youtube capture is a good way to figure out whether or not a demo is good enough that you'd want to watch it in its full glory. let's face it, most aren't.

I'm pretty sure that classic examples of success like a rewrite from scratch or the redesign everybody longs for will make the world a better place.</sarcasm>

Honestly, keep stuff mostly as is, fix bugs and add new features one by one, and re-align where appropriate. And don't merge any bigger projects.

Or in the end, will sit around multiple piles of abandoned, dysfunctioning shit and don't know where to post random pictures (and the occassional demo).

Oh, I forgot: Refactor under the hood for as long as necessary (this basically is a continuous task) without breaking too much stuff. This is what I've been doing for many, many years and experience told me to keep it that way. Just sain'.
