Lend me your nyan cat prod videos!
category: offtopic [glöplog]
I'm thinking of making a compilation video of all nyan prods so far, with info text cards between the clips.
Getting familiar enough with all the emulators would take way too long though, so I thought I'd crowdsource footage for each of them.
Most video formats should be fine - as long as ffmpeg is able to decode them, meaning kdenlive is able to make sense of them.
Since most platforms are 4:3 and PAL that's the format I'm aiming for (probably 960x720 or 640x480).
If possible, try to capture at 25 or 50 fps to avoid rate conversion.
Scaling the videos up in advance to keep any "pixeliness" is probably advicable - I can't figure out how to tell kdenlive to use no filtering.
I count 13 prods (plus the telnet one) so far (feel free to point out any I missed though):
ZX Spectrum
C16
Windows
Atari VCS
BBC Micro
Atari STe
Amstrad CPC
Atari Jaguar
TurboGrafx
Thomson TO8
ZX Spectrum (BASIC)
Nintendo DS - not sure if related, but first comment seems to indicate so
Atari 7800
telnet miku.acm.uiuc.edu
(I already have the VCS video of course)

^ha ha!!! Cool trick!
ah, and if we're including newschool platforms, we forgot the very first one...

When you know what you need and where I can put it I guess I can try to capture nyan7800 from MESS.

OMG, I totally forgot about MESS supporting other platforms than the VCS. This changes everything - I should be able to do most of the captures myself :)

Yes, MESS supports a shitload of platforms (badly, often), but the main reason I'd use it is because it has all the recording functionality built in.

I've never used MESS, but judging from the scorn I've heard Spectrum emulator authors pour over it, it probably won't do a good job with Nyantro on the Spectrum (it uses multicolour tricks that require really accurate timing in emulators).
MESS is the jack of all trades, master of none. Well, not quite. It does emulate some systems very well, but generally the best emulators written specifically for a given platform tend to be better than MESS.
OK, so I realized the biggest hurdle for me is figuring out how to load and start the prods on every damn machine's OS (nevermind aquiring said OSes to begin with).
I managed to snag a 7800 capture and even got NyAtom to load and run - I even waited the whole three minutes it took to load!
I could grab a few videos from youtube, but that feels like cheating (and gives worse quality).
I'll poke a bit more at this though. I'd rather the captures are larger than the target resolution than not - so 320x240 could be scaled to say 1600x1200 using nearest neighbor, which I could then scaled back down..
Alternatively I realize I could just make a YouTube playlist and just upload captures for the missing prods :o
Regarding MESS: Yeah, it supporting recording is rather nice.
As for quality, I've found its VCS emulator slightly better than Stella, but I hear the next version of the latter will rectify this.
The question is why the devs don't incorporate the better emulators into it. git-submodule makes such things quite a bit easier - just fork, add the necessary glue code and merge every so often. The shitty way they seem to do version control at the moment may explain the lack of such efforts..

For NyAtmos, Oricutron supports AVI export. I know 'cause I wrote it ;-)

Possibly, but the MAME/MESS license doesn't help things either: http://www.mess.org/license

I got around to making a very crisp capture of nyan7800 and managed to get youtube to keep it as 720p: linky (requested it added to the prod). Fun fact: if I reverse the order of the streams so audio is stream 0 and video stream 1 then youtube capped the quality at 480p..
I might do one or two more captures for prods that are missing them but I don't think I have the energy to make a compilation video any more :o

It could be worse (or better, depending on your POV): it could be ponies.
