Old farts?
category: offtopic [glöplog]
Do we have any old farts/people hanging out in here a lot? I am over 35 years old and still love demos that I discovered when I was a teenager (discovered Future Crew's Second Reality back in 1993 on my 486 DX2/66 machine!). I come to this radical/rad. Pouet web site weekly (CATurdays) for new top voted ones and BBS. :)
taking the age of the average scener into account these days pouet would be pretty empty without them "old farts" ;)
Let's face it the demoscene is old...
486 DX2/66 w0w =D
The average age of a demoscener these days is well above 30. I am 27, and I always used to be one of the youngest people around...
But you're in mensa. So, you're wise like old men.
While, me, I didn't work at school and so, still look like I'm 18. Though I'm 28. I'll be young forever!

Old Amiga Scener here from 1992 onwards. 34 years old. Missed out on the PC scene in the late 90s and early 2000s as I stopped swapping in 1995 so didn't get hold of any demos. Then I found pouet and scene.org and all is well in the world.

37, started in a cracking group called megablood.
43, still walking without stick.
I also remember being on hornet.org a lot too. :)
I need a stick :(
i am dancing :)
40. Used to be in 7 Up Crew on C64 in the 80's and Surprise! Productions on PC in the early 90s. Wrote a few articles for Imphobia mag as well :)
What are the reasons in your oppinion that the average age of a scener is so high ? And what are the consequences of this on the short and long run for the demoscene?
Bah! Get off my chunky primary green pixellated lawn!
I was seventeen when I got my first computer, a ZX81 for Xmas 1981, This was a long time before anything called 'Demoscene'. I found that back in the late eighties.

When I was twelve...
So the xbox/playstation/wii generations of childeren have big chances not to get interested in the demoscene thus the demoscene could be extinct some day?
When I was 22
Then I was 32
And at the age of 42, this was the scene at c64.
Will it stop? Nah... don't think so...
I have been involved within the demoscene in one way or another since around 1991 or so, mainly since meeting up with CiH back in the day at a local computer club. I may well be an old fart (I am approaching the grand old age of 40 after all) - not quite ready for the old pipe and slippers thing yet, but damn - the demoscene gives me hope that there are decent people in this world who don't just enjoy themselves by drinking to excess, puking in the street and boasting about it later - but by being creative with technology, even if part of that does mean enjoying a few drinks.
I reckon that by keeping on with the demoscene, it keeps us all feeling young, no matter what ages we actually are. I think the oldest scener I met was in his early 50s or so and that was at Evoke 2007, but I forget either his name or his nick ..... (D'oh!) ;)

Started the demoscene 1991 and at 35 years old now I'm more active than ever :D
Sometimes I wonder how will be the demoscene when we will be 60 years old, teh grandfathers of the demoscene :D
@rez: my guess is that in about 10-20 years a new form of production - the healthtro - will rule them all ;)
