I've heard back from 1 of my 2 jap friends. He's on the opposite coast to sendai. No major problem from the quake/tsunami there, but the next day they had their own major (6+) quake. There's some damage to the city, but his family is unaffected luckily.

There have been many major aftershocks, not all in the same area as the original quake. Hopefully it will settle down and there are no more major ones for a while!

Still not heard from our other friend, but she's in osaka, it's not affected I think.

Anyone know if got is ok?

Since this sums up my feeling quite well, especially since there should be news about block 2, which seems to be encountering an ongoing meltdown, which would be the worst event so far.

All that suspense... they should just bomb the damn thing with tons of concrete.

reactor 2 is severly damaged and it seems the whole plant is being evacuated.. good luck to all that still have to stay in japan!

I've heard different versions of what will happen if there's a serious meltdown at this plant. Most say it will not be too bad, nothing like chernobyl. But the other story is that the mixture of fuel can make it explosive, which would spread radiation over a large area. I really, really hope it's not that second option, but I think that came from an engineer at the plant :(

If all of Japan becomes contaminated with (higher than natural) radioactivity, what should be done? How can 128 million people be evacuated? Where should they settle? (Australia perhaps?)

Sadly our (the Australian Government's) dealings with refugees is already fairly fucked up anyway - asylum seekers held in "detention centers". But we love the Japanese people coming for a visit, eating some of our native wild-life, playing on our golf-courses and taking a shitload of shashin. Maybe everyone in Japan should take a couple of months of leave whilst the government & boffins work it all out. Be great for our tourism industry.
I ain't chucking any prawns on the barby for Adok tho. ;)
