Nobody's "demonizing" nuke power -- we're simply discussing known facts on the current situation. Just like nobody's "demonizing" water because of the tsunami.

A natural disaster has happened in a country where I know people, and there's a lot of unanswered questions. It's a common human response to want to discuss the knows and unknowns.

thom: Old designs are not necessarily bad designs. The BWR-type reactors as used in Fukushima are widely regarded as some of the safest. The RBMK-type reactor used at Chernobyl is widely regarded as the most dangerous, and would never have been approved in the West even before the disaster. For a start, BWR reactors are not intended to produce weapons grade plutonium :)

Also considering this reactor was subjected to an unprecedented mega-earthquake followed by a tsunami and only farted out a little venting, whereas Chernobyl and TMI blew up all by themselves, I think Fukushima did pretty well.

You may wanna read about the Three Mile Island accident, as that is more like what's going on here (reactor SCRAM ok, but residual heat causes complications)

The quake did little damage to Tokyo but caused particularly serious damage in Tohoku area.

The Inoues' that I knowie are safe and well and their family closer to the quake are good too. I still think 301's silver lining is the most optimistic post I've seen anywhere for a while and I hope he's safe.

I hope everyone is ok. I mean, the sceners, my friends over there and of course everyone else. You can never be too prepared for something like this...

Highly concerned about the development at Fukushima blocks I & III right now. It already looks quite bad, but against various news outlets it's certainly not a chernobyl (yet?). Hope they manage to keep the cores standing, even tho there appears to be _some_ damage already and/or the containments holding when it comes to the worst.

Otherwise the devastation by the tsunami itself might have been the smaller evil.

They are reporting one casualty as a consequence of the explosion. I find it quite interesting that this seems to be ignored by the mainstream media, which rather focussed on inventing doomsday scenarios.

@Gargaj: Yeah, it's incredibly how calm they remained so far. So far there've only been news of a smaller panic near Fukushima I when they were extending the evacuation area.

Regarding the before/after images: It's obvious, that the two images are perfectly alligned when using buildings as reference-points. But how on earth did the two yellow painted stripes on the runway get moved?!

@Punqtured: The before pictures are from early 2010, so they possibly repainted those in the meanwhile
