tUM*o4: anonymous competitions? You decide!

category: general [glöplog]

Some of you may remember last year's tUM, where we chose not to display the names/groups of the artists in the "individual artists competitions" (graphics and music).
We did this so that the voters could concentrate on the actual contributions and not the artist (and so to somewhat limit the name voting).
Actually, we're having a poll on www.tum-home.de to investigate your opinion about that.

Go on vote, what are you waiting for? ;-)
We appreciate your help!

i don't think it matters really... if someone wants to namevote, he will anyway, regardless of the name being shown or not.
names (or at least song/graphic titltes) shown make voting easier.

or force groups not to write names/groups in their demos/intros aswell for a cleaner vote.. ;-)
Or just let people do what they want, they will anyway as Gargaj mentioned!

Well, what we did last time looked something like this:

tUM*o3: Tracked Music Competition
Entry #1 / Title: "World of Unicorns"

And the effect occured, that we had far fewer votes based on "ah, I know that guy's name and vote for him even if I didn't see the compo".
Ok, on the other hand we had fewer votes altogether, but they were more distinguished than on other parties.

Fact is, that many people are bored by single artists competitions, especially mp3-compos and so they don't even watch/hear them anymore. When it comes to voting they just flip down some names they know in the intranet voting system thus watering down the entire ranking.

anonymous. and measured with an applause meter (if you have no applause meter, a drunk orga will suffice). nobody really likes to vote for such compos cept for the people who enter and some close friends maybe (and some utterly bored people).

but how could it happen that last year - even though he didn't make it through the preselection - skyrunner made it to #1 in the mp3 compo? =)
(could be that i missed this already solved mystery which seemed to be quite on fire after tum)

richard, forget the applausemeter - last year only very few people cared for the compos. =)

so?

well, remember the compos .. 10-15 people sitting infront of the screen =) (not counting the demo+introcompo which actually caught the attention of almost everybody)

if no one votes and cares ... close the compos

dalezy: afaik there was no preselection, the last entries just were not shown because the compo would have got too long.

"if no one votes and cares ... close the compos"

Exactly! Close the scene, stop making demos and just hold regular all-male nerd orgies instead.
There goes the neighborhood.

dalezy, i repeat, so? why cant applause be measured if the audience is 15 people? i'm quite sure such a measure is not less accurate than any 'voting', cause most votes come from friends who may not have even experienced the compos. and it's much more fun.

Ok dalezy, to solve this "mystery" for now and all times the following happened on tUM*o3: all entries were votable by the fact, that they all were played over the net-radio. Even those which weren't in the "compo lineup". This detail had been written down in the general competition rules before and everybody should have been aware of. We do not plan to repeat this on the next tUM though.

let the artist carry around a hat asking for money and the one who gets the most money wins. for mp3-compos that is.

I said it many times in the past and will say it again, formal music compos should be replaced by some sort of audio feed during the parties with productions made or released at the party place. Maybe even a vote but as was said, who cares about results in music compos. Part of the interest in entering a music compo is getting your music played to a larger audience after all.

And at least with the audio feed you can give a change to "non-compo" genre of music.

chance, not change.

Or if you must organize compos, make sure your audience can sit in the grass in an open area and invite the sunshine there. (but don't expect anyone to vote :)

"make sure your audience can sit in the grass in an open area and invite the sunshine there."

For tUM this would be really hard. But a lot of dryers should be a big help to reach this goal. :)

Anyway, anonymous single artist compos in combination with party radio / grafic board are a nice solution - if you come with your computer. :)
whoops... i missed the discussion on combined/separate graphics compo...

i'd find it nice to be allowed to use any kind of tools when composing the picture, use raytraced elements and 2d gfx, as long as thecompo doesn't get too many entries... but well, i guess too late, and one voice wouldn't change the statistics anyway, would it?

auge, maybe it would.
in my opinion i wouldn't put both compos together, as there's still a major difference between handdrawn and calculated graphics. just think of a combined musick compo (c64 musick vs. mp3) - that wouldn't work out as well.

Let's compare some apples with pears. :)
dalezy: as opposed to streaming music vs. modules vs. c64 music, there are no natural medium limitations in modern graphics. It is largely high-rez nowadays, and noone does it one pixel at a time.

Like, it's allowed to have a piece of sound stream in the tracked music, it bothers noone... but allowing rendered elements in handdrawn art, or vice versa, apparently would jeopardize the compo... so why not merge them at all? Naturally, this would not simply mean that the same entries get judged against each other, but this also provokes a shift in an art form, inviting artists to do combined art, using elements of traditional, 3D, and even photography... Of course there are already parties which do that, so it's not necessary that other parties give up this traditional separation.

Madenmann: let's compare some beer with apples with pears. :)
