Board games you must play before you die

category: residue [glöplog]
since a friend recently introduced me to the new breed of "Eurogame" boards games, i have become a board game fan. they are not mind numbing like popular retailstore games Monopoly, cludo, meeh) or a life sinkers like DnD (a game only played by nerds and paedophiles).

no, these new bopard games are actually fun, dynamic, challenging and have some very ingenious boardgame mechanics behind those dry rule-pages. anyone playing these games will know what i mean.

two i have been playing recently:

I thought Puerto Rico was pretty lame, compared to Settlers & others, so be excited, there's a lot of good stuff out there.

Favourite: Settlers of Catan. The Settlers Seafarers extension is obligatory, for those who haven't tried it, it's really a must-try. The Cities and Knights extension is also AWESOME, but it changes Setters into a totally different game, and takes a lot of time to get into.

My second favourite boardgame is Carcassone. My GF and I play it regularly, and it doesn't get stale. There's also a bunch of extensions, most of which are pretty good.

Third suggestion: Agricola. It's not as replayable as Settlers and Carcassonne, but it's alright -- better than Puerto Rico.

Ah yes Carcassone. Played it every day at lunch at work for 2 years. It's excellent.

@cg_: Really?? How long is your lunch? A game generally takes an hour for us, with some extensions.

Ticket to Ride is not one of my favourites - it depends too much on luck. The 3 route cards you (randomly) get at the beginning will either set you up our tear you down. (Maybe it's different in the Europe version, only tried the US one?)

For those of you how like Puerto Rico, have a look at Caylus, too.

It's a welcome change from Puero Rico, and also quite good. But as there is no trading, like Puerto Rice, it could theoretically played in complete silence (like PR)

Oh, and Diplomacy is also quite nice. It might even give you a better sense of international diplomacy.

Pandemic - a great game of cooperation.

Settlers of Catan and Ticket to ride are also great.
