What makes a scener a scener?
category: general [glöplog]
I wonder why this hasn't been dropped here yet :)
"I wanna tell you a little secret, being a scener is just like being in love. No one needs to tell you you are in love, you just know it, through and through."

Being a scener is like making love to a beautiful woman: You won't do it. Ever.

Nah, diskmag editors are diskmag editors because they can't make demos. There are some exceptions though, I know of this one diskmag that was filled with people who actually made demos. I guess that also makes them sceners, because in a way: if you don't make demoscene demos.. well, you know.Making a diskmag requires far more conscientiousness than creativity, so that may be an explanation why diskmag editors usually don't make demos and demo makers usually don't make diskmags.

I am worried my son might be a demoscener.
There's a really simple test you can do at home.
Get some vinegar, get some baking soda. Then make a big clay volcano. Then while this is erupting, if your son is too busy coding a demo in 68000 assembler or tracking music using some fancy hexadecimal notation, he's surely a scener.

Hurray, I'm a scener!
ham: or sucking a dick.
ham ftw. Best yahoo answers ref ever.
when he/she is doing something more than just clicking on a youtube link on pouet? :)
What makes a troll a megatroll?
Thanks for the few serious answers in this thread. kb's analogy with the beautiful woman was interesting, as I wasn't aware that it might be many (male) people's dream to have sex with a beautiful woman one day. Regarding gloom's explanation why diskmag editors don't make demos: Why "can't" diskmag editors make demos? Some have enough skills in programming, creating graphics or composing music that they could contribute to, or even lead, a demo project; I rather think that for some reason, they are more interested in making a diskmag than in making a demo, and I'm searching for explanations why (personality factors, biographical details and so on). As regards myself, I've never been interested in democoding, although I acquired some programming skills already at an early age because of my wish to develop games. I have never watched too many demos; I was always more interested in diskmags; and I admired demomakers for their skills, but I never felt any urge to become one of them.
gloom: so that makes musicians and graphicians non demosceners, ok, nice going there nazi!
When I saw Phenomena's Enigma for the first time, that just changed my life for ever, and at this moment I just wanted to be like that guys who made that demo.
Since I was not so bad at drawing when I was young, I started to do gfx on my Amiga 500, then 3d raytraced picture because that interested me a lot.
I liked music too (playing different wind instrument in classical orchestra), so I started to do some module around 1994, then since I was more interested in doing music and I problably was a better musician than graphician I keeped that job on the scene during several years.
Of course, doing his OWN demo is the Graal of most of demomakers I think, now I'm starting to be old, I learned a lot of different things so I'm able to realize on the screen the effect I wanted to do since 1991 but without never beeing able to do it (that's why my intros looks oldskool :D).
Well, as BoyC said, you KNOW when you are a scener, it's something from the heart :)

stupid question!!! first grade sceners write the fucking code and showcase it. second grade diskmaggers kinda report about it, and there's the 'custumers' getting attracted to the scene.
I dunno what's wrong with this scheme.
@Adok. relax!!!

Replace "ginger" with "scener".
