and it's the "express" version, i suppose it's like not buying the enterprise version of the older versions.
I'm actually curious about that last bit. The command-line optimizing compiler has also been freely released now, so what's the point of the Express-version having no optimizing capabilities?

It looks like the Express-version is just the enterprise stuff *without* the enterprise stuff like SQL Explorers and InterDev and whatnot.

Or is it?

The express edition, if i got it right, is the cheap version. It is meant for hobbyists, not for commercial prods.
The beta is free, but it has a time limit built in, and the final will cost some money. (not too much, if we can believe what MS stated, as the hobby developers are the target market)
No optimizing compiler, but there's an ide and other fancy stuff.
for a democoder with a correct editor i think the optimizing compiler worths more...

the time limit is some time next year if i recall...
Also the FAQ seems to indicate it can _only_ create .NET executables _or_ command-line executables, not ordinary Windows executables. It might be me reading the FAQ wrong; it sounds a bit weird :-)
