Demoscene self-exposure
category: general [glöplog]
Hello people. Please surrender, this is a survey.
I would like to know you opinion on whether it is good or bad to expose the demoscene to the general public.
Say, if there was a possibility to organize public beaming of demos on an evening in a city park. How would you like that?
Should demoscene go underground and avoid contact with the "outer world"? Or should demoscene try to gain new members from it? Can outer world be considerend harmful? And at all, can isolation last?
I see myself and most of my friends happy about scene being mentioned in the press, but i know there are people of another opinion. Now i wanted to know how these groups of sceners relate in number, and what arguments can they make to support their opinions.
Thank you.

It's bad to expose your privates if you are unattractive.
do not slashdot pouet
Please, take it seriosly. I'm definately not going to slashdot *anything*.
It's about demos appearing at art exhibitions, television, printed press - for normal people rather than slashdotters. I don't read slashdot either. Pouet has been taking away enough of my time to feed my internet community addiction.

The slashdot crowd has been surprisingly harmless - almost all of them took the "look dont touch" approach. I mean there could have been a flood of trolls..
Bring it to anyone who will care!
Despite all the "Three Necked Chipmunk" whining about the consequences of the massification of the demoscene, the fact remains that even if you show it to everyone only a small percentage of geeky inclined folks will be interested enough to actually participate.
Most people enjoy watching.
A small percentage of the people who watch will be interested in learning more.
A small percentage of those who want to learn more will be interested in participating.
A small percentage of those interested in participating will participate actively.

The question is, how secret do you think the demoscene is?
Please check the download numbers of the most popular demos on scene.org. These demos have been downloaded any watched by many many people, another public screening would not increase the audience by a huge margin.
The difference is that these people are passive consumers which do not give any feedback.

ok it's me whining (as many say) again.
in my opinion exposing the demoscene to the general public sucks.
let's take a look at advantages and disadvantages of that.
[ adv ]
- employers will pay more attention to talented ppl
- lots of new members ( also see disadv. )
- getting famous among non-sceners ( don't think real sceners need that so much )
- larger parties == more prizes ( also see disadv. )
[ disadv ]
- lots of ppl flooding scene websites with stupid questions, talking about underwear, dogs etc ;)
- LOTS of mediocre and shitty releases. Hope you don't get asleep watching shitload of crap intros/demos while waiting for new fr/cns/moppi/... release at some demoparty.
- For sure there will appear ppl thinking of making profit of scene.
- I'm almost sure there will appear some commercial prods with advertisment etc etc soon.
so i think if you want to save that little feeling of real scene we all still have, be conservative and keep scene underground. EVERYTHING that goes public nowadays turns into shit very soon. Isn't it ?
sorry for mistakes. pretty sure there are many.

This would be mostly centered on game development, the eternal black hole sucking up all demosceners. There are also fulfilling (and often better paying) careers outside of the demoscene.
LOTS of mediocre and shitty releases.
.. and this would be different from now in which way?

hw. few comments were posted while i was writing my one.
you know, many say : we need new members, we need more releases etc. Look. Are there not enugh creative ppl ? Do you suffer from lack of ( quality ) releases ? You really do ? If so, stop whining, take werkkzeug and make your own. It was never so easy before to make a demo.
Demoscene never used to involve massmedia. And number of sceners increases every day. Do we need more ? Scene isn't dying form lack of creativity. It is dying from surplus of (pseudo)creativity.
question
If you don't agree with me, please point what are you going to gain from making scene really pop ?

stelthz : even more ! can yoou imagine 50 new releases and 10 new groups per day ? :))))
Indeed, the release of .wwerkkzzeug may bring some new talent (or people without talent :) ) to the demoscene. However, I am afraid its still a little bit too unintuitive to use for many people. It may bring the same people to the demoscene that are now flooding the web with their crap flash anims..
exposure can be good, but I wouldn't like to see lots of people oversaturating our world with productions. Even if they are average/ good.

or at least bring in people who don't abuse the refresh button...
that's why i'm grieved of farbrausch releasing full-functional version of werkkzeug. demoscene was always about hard competition. 64k's were always a cherry on the top of the pie. Now anyone can create outstanding intros and win compos not even writing a single line of code nor taking care of compression.
believe me it's too easy to remove startup (resolution selection) dialog, change precalc bar, avoid packing with kkrunchy, pack app with some common tool and and thus fake release origin.
it's a little harder ( but possible ;) to use kkrunchy built in werkkzeug for packing anything you want :(
farbrausch do tou hear me ? ;)

Navis : "exposure can be good". arguments ?
my heart is to the b-side
BURP
thank you :)
All this werkkzeug related whining is _so_ useless and beside the point. :)
And concerning 'exposure', I say, yes, but not at all costs. Though, I believe this way you'll only acquire some new 'fans', no new sceners. But then again, there's probably nothing wrong with that.

wow - and i so thought this was the wrong place for a serious discussion. :)
damn. i don't get it. all you need are fans ? so it's all about fame ? i've been told contrary
