Thanks for the input Decipher, It was the only thing I could find as a starting off point. Are there any better tools or graphical coding tutorials which I could learn from?
As I say, I've got coding experience, but none in the graphical sector, so I don't have a clue what to use or how to beat match!

Try my tutorial; it's c/c++ based, but the basics are the same for anything.. http://iki.fi/sol/gp/ There's also a bunch of demo-like effects there.
Thanks for that Sol, I'll definitely have a read!! The nearest thing I've had to this is mindlessly programming winamp plugins for hours on end so it's all a bit new. Any other helpful starters?
Maybe the NEHE OpenGL tutorials can still be helpful?
Nah. Nehe is dead. http://www.opengl.org/sdk/docs/man3/ & http://opengl.org/wiki/Main_Page FTW
More precisely: http://www.opengl.org/wiki/Getting_started
There's also a list of democoding tutorials for beginners at: http://www.hugi.scene.org/main.php?page=democoding

"Hugi Special Edition #1: Coding Digest" contains all programming-related articles from Hugi issues 11 to 27. This enables you to retrieve information on a particular topic very fast. While the Hugi Index that has already been available for a longer time has only permitted you to search for keywords in the headlines, you can now search the full texts and immediately read them, store them to HTML and print them.

also, hugi is the demoscene equivalent of viagra spam
"stop flaming and trolling maali"
Maali is the demoscene equivalent of Rowan Atkinson.
spinning cubes and ribbons make you fat!
Undercult, I like your music. You are craaaazy.
Also, though not currently used too much in the demoscene, I'd suggest you take a look at these:

And Adok would be called the demoscene equivalent of mister Bean.
Now go and make a demo about it! :)
Adok mister Bean? more like hitler?
@Proteque: Perhaps you are right... or maybe no. :D
Flaming and godwin on page 2! Welcome to the demoscene where everybody is an asshole, except that guy *points at random dude*
Yay, I'm not an asshole! Or was it the guy behind me?
I heard that a certain demogroup known as Spaceballs is full of assholes.
Hey I'm not asshole either. I only use groundbeef as a hat! *WHEE* (goes on running around with a groundbeef as a hat)...
This thread is turning into a brilliantly compact precis of the demo scene.. We just need a couple of suitable random pics and a Ferraro Rocher-sized chunk of conspiracy theory with a cherry on top to finish it off nicely.
there you go, sir.
Welcome, Undercult. Late is never to late, you could aswell have lived without stumbling on this.
In my opinion the scene probably carries less magic than it did, because nowadays tools and ubiquity of computers and awesome graphics and computing power make it less important that the thing is realtime or that it holds outstanding coding skills. Plus I'm not a teen anymore :).
But, still, still.
There's the top 10 prods at the left-bottom of this page (if you try heaven7, don't miss the high-res version (which i did, shameless selfpromote :) ) ) ; unfortunately it doesnt seem to be possible to have more than 10 all-time top. Best would be, maybe, to browse the major parties from last years and to see the 3 or 5 best ranked demos and intros of those.
However there are very old gems too.
