I think the voting system behind stackoverflow.com is quite neat. You can downvote once you've acquired enough points (~ glops) and downvoting cost you some points. I think each vote should come with a comment or else it will be easy to game the system (like digg and reddit are gamed).

Seems like I'm going against the grain in this thread, but I'd very much like a 5* rating for demos. NOT as a voting option though.

Just take the average of the votes for a prod, use it to generate a star rating for the prod (and ignore anything with <10 votes). Keeps the voting system simple, but still gives you that instant + clear idea of how good the demo is.

This time about numbers, not comments:

I just dislike negativity, and this "simple" change would make pouet a much more constructive and positive community.

Do you have any rational or empirical proof for this statement? Eliminating "thumbs down" would bring a little cognitive mess: compare the standard deviation of particular rates of "neutral but solid prods" and "controversial" - final rate is not the only one used factor in appraisement. Don't force people to leave a "constructive" comment if they just want to express impression about a prod (agree with front234). Changing the system won't change character of comments in most cases, I predict.

Quote:
The more BB Image the better the prod is, the less BB Image the worse the prod is.

Not exactly. If something is neutral for you, will you put rulez vote or not? In most cases, you (not directly you) will look at the actual rate and balance it in your direction, if you care of course. Or, if you think the prod in your opinion deserve note 0.40, would you post a comment with thumbs? If no, in fact you will put the same note as person who - for example - hates it. You don't eliminate negatives, you just mix them with neutral opinions.

Now try to imagine this system:

Quote:
The less BB Image the better the prod is, the more BB Image the worse the prod is.

Exactly the same. The difference is in human's thinking. The less differences in judgements about voting itself, the better system is.

I saw this system on some other pages and it didn't work well, had a lot of flaws. In extreme cases negative comments were stated as trolling/hating. Please do not make any illusions or false, forced positivity.

And, one note: constructive people do not need an icons for express own thoughts.

I'd rather tilt the scales in favour of positivity, IMHO you can achieve what you want with just the piggie and the thumbs-up.

I like the voting system exactly as it is.

IMO it's already tilted towards positivity due to the coup de coeur. I agree pouet could use more positivity, but I like the voting-system the way it is BB Image

here's food for thought:

Anoxia Redux - 56 up, 36 oink, 65 down. conclusion: controversial demo, divides audience. might worth watching purely for the curiousity factor.

now let's remove the downs, and add half of them to the pigs (because they have no other option but let's say half of them will just not comment)

Anoxia Redux - 56 up, 68 oink. conclusion: demo is dull, didnt excite audience most of the audience. not worth watching.

i like especially the pig in the pouet voting system.
alfter elaborate thought, here's my suggestion:

good prod: BB Image
bad prod: BB Image
ok prod: BB Image

have a heart for pigs! BB ImageBB ImageBB Image

Screw this, make the down-thumb twice the size of the up-thumb instead.

I fail to see how disabling downvoting would make things any more constructive.

I expect people to tell me when they feel my work sucks, even if being told so isn't pleasant. But we're not kids, are we?

zavie: I guess you're right. just like the thumb down doesn't stop people from being ridiculously over-the-top positive whenever certain groups release something.

Maali: A user CSS will do:

Code:img[src="gfx/sucks.gif"] { content:url(gfx/rulez.gif); }

Voila. Moving on.

The system is fine as-is. Changing it to a facebook-esque "like" system not only decreases the perceived value of the votes (read Gargaj's comment carefully, he's completely right) but also neglects one important thing about FB: The only reason why there's no dislike button is because negativity is a detriment to advertising income. People want to feel cozy and secure - and companies don't want anyone to easily express their dislike towards them or their products. Simple as that.

Pouet isn't Facebook tho. No advertising money involved. And despite all the groupies, haters, selfvoters, "selfvoting si teh sux" downvoters, "didn't run here" downvoters, namevoters, "i expected more" downvoters, BBS trolls, oneliner trolls, oldschoolers trying to start groupwars because they rightfully feel left out etc. pp, the votes here at pouet are in most cases a pretty precise measurement of a production's quality and/or fame. Law of big numbers FTW.

Also, more constructive without thumb downs? WTF? What's more constructive than honesty, as brutal as it may be?

Just drop the popularity and allow us to change our minds/votes already, will you :)

No. let the thumbs stay as they were at the time, much like a historical document too. Scripta manent.
