Why Huge Screen compos are underrated on pouet?
category: parties [glöplog]
The huge screen compo is perhaps the most spectacular compo I have ever seen, for huge screen prods are exlusively shown on the Europe's largest exterior screen. It takes place in Arles where main#x demo parties are hosted.
Huge screen compo participants are certainly very happy to have their entries available from pouet. I wonder however if huge screen compos should be rated on pouet because poueters who have not attended the compo seem to underrate them. It is really something that must be seen live.
The main reason behind underrating is the resolution used in Huge Screen releases, 960/89. This res is necessary to fit the screen's format: 960 bulbs (horiz) X 89 bulbs (verti). When seeing those huge screen prods at home, you won't be impressed at all. Another reason, perhaps related to the former, is that sceners seem to prefer to release minimalists prods with old school effects to be shown on the huge screen (see e.g. one of last year's entry http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=53982).

Please tell us more about this unknown huge screen!
It's pretty goddamn big is what it is!
Then how come it's underrated on Pouet?!
Because we don't have enough bulbs!
What does it matter anyway? These days most idiots watch demos from youtube anyway.
I think linking to live captures on youtube would help a lot. (I see the ones from this year are up there now, although not split into individual demos - no sign of last year's at all.) I'm surprised that anyone is going to the trouble of rating them based on the 100Mb+ raw videos...
Obviously it's still not the same as being there - but then nothing ever is, and it's not really a reason to leave them off Pouet.

Youtube is probably the best way to appreciate these demos, unless you happen to have a hugescreen installed on your house :)
Most idiots... Strong words... have nothing to do with the subject.
Will you buy a TI calculator to watch 5 productions.?. and still...

pommak: Which reminds me - I just upgraded my GPU, so please make the next MFX / Kewlers-demo a GPU-eating monster, thanks :)

Why not? ;-)
sim: Nope, I don't watch TI productions.
gloom: More than happy to help you! Since we don't have any modern GPUs you can send yours to us! The address is Kewlosroad 420, Kewlcity, Kewltron.

MAIN orgas should've organized a good video coverage of each entry and add it to pouet. Take some pride in your Nische compo.
As for the huge screen. It is not easy to tranfer all the sentiments when you are watching a demo on such a big medium.
I would like to see it in action from the plane =).
Despite a funny resolution, I hope to see more stuff next year. The screen may be used in a very original way giving its special features and capabilities..

tFt: yes, it is a somkinda niche compo. But still, not too many releases to be fully proud of, except that it is a HUGE screen. I think.
Why isn't anyone making a demo about this?
ha....ha................ha.......
do it!
do it!
arles should sponsor free helicopter rides at main just for the hugescreen compo ;=)
well ive watched the stream and all i can say about it: it didnt really give anything but an idea what the huge-screen entries were like. its simply not re-experienceable anywhere else than in front of the screen.

Which is why people should come to Main. :-)
gloom: the screen has an inclination of pi/4 or so. I gave too reasons for the underrating :
- the resolution (length = 10 times the height) implies that when watched from the avi, the prods is displayed in a tiny rectangle;
- contrast is low;
- due to these constraints, prods are more minimalists, often old school.
- as they are shown as videos, although some are originally real time (e.g. "madchip" by FRq), one might not be willing to download the big file;
- sim said better than me that "it is not easy to tranfer all the sentiments when you are watching a demo on such a big medium", unless you "see it in action from the plane =)."
As suggested by gasman, "llinking to live captures on youtube would help a lot."
tFt: this is a good idea for next year. A link to YT should be okay too.
sim: we had 11 entries this year and 9 last year, which is not too small a number. Main#x demo party is not so big. I don't think there was a pre-selection. I should check this from the orgas.
wysiwft, Zavie: definitely.

They are no pre-selection for the hugescreen
ulrick: I guess the point people are trying to make is -- what point are you trying to make? "Why huge screen compos are underrated on Pouet?" is a sentence (well, barely) that makes little sense, so please feel free to expand on that.
