What is the most used "instrument" in demoscene music?
I ask, because i know what the rarest "instrument" is, the harmonica, massively outnumbered by the washboard :)

Bass drum
For the most used, I'd go for either the orchestra-hit (used by Purple Motion in 2nd Reality) or perhaps the ever so famous breakbeat-loop, used in hundreds of 4ch and even multichannel tracked songs.
For the rarest, I'll definately go for banjo. It's quite odd actually, since it's a string-instrument easily compared to a guitar. There hasn't been much tunes with classical instruments such as cellos, various bras or accordions.

Pft ... heard that a million times or so, LOL ;-) What the heck is that?
in the idm-heydays, it was probably the autoexec.bat being followed by ft2.sys.
piano? bass drum?
Pulse leads. Mono synths.
303
4klang
Any general instrument / sound, probably bass drum yes. As a non-percussion sound I'm gonna say pulse wave, it's also debateble whether 'synth' could be classified as an instrument. As an actual instrument probably piano, can't think of really anything that could be generally considered popular, maybe BASS! :)
Sinus
reverb.
Thanks to the massive amount of cheesey (doskpop) demoscene music made between 1994 to ca 2001. Id say the pan flute.
Sawtooth, maybe?
pulse leads +1
