Scene.org Awards 2011

category: parties [glöplog]
i agree with jeenio on the norwegian blondines!
Since TG won't change their rules about alcohol they could at least give away free blowjobs.

I don't care too much, but maybe I'd feel differently about it if I was ever nominated for anything :o)

I was nominated, and it didn't exactly rock my world. The awards still seem pretty pointless. If I had won, maybe I'd care more, but then that says it all, I think: the awards are for a select few sceners who already have all the recognition our tiny little scene can give them but still feel they need to congratulate each other. The rest of us really don't need to care.

Yes, I'm trolling, but the point stands. ;)

srsly guys, what the hell?

some demosceners want to organise an awards ceremony. they want to do it at TG. TG organisers want it too, because hope that this will inspire some more sceners to attend the party. they want that, because they like demos and the scene.

neither TG nor the scene.org awards are "the scene" or pretend to be. when a scene.org awards logo spelled "scene awards" some years ago this got flamed and fixed, and rightfully so. additionally, winning e.g. breakpoint or assembly has always been considered a "bigger thing" than winning a scene.org award. not unlike large scener-only easter parties, the scene does not "need" scene.org awards, but the scene does like it. sounds like a win-win: sceners like the scene.org awards, and despite a lot of effort and difficulty, the scene.org people like to organise them. better yet, they found a venue that loves to have them! wonderful.

so i really don't understand what the fuss is about. TG is still completely non-profit, and everybody knows that they don't need the scene for anything at all - the organisers just want it to be a part of it. as shown in posts in this thread, being able to "play the art card" to politicians has nothing to do with it. i'm not sure that scamp understands that events like TG and ASM are actually nationally known events in those countries (big events, small countries). it's a whole different league than BP.

TG people do TG for kicks, just like BP people did BP for kicks, and just like the scene.org guys keep a great archive up and running for kicks, and spend ridiculous amounts of effort doing a fancy awards show for the same reason. seriously, what's the problem?

the whole "money" rampage that scamp is on feels so irrelevant. is anybody personally getting paid for doing anything here? if TG helps scene.org keep their servers up and running, is that bad? when did melwyn, lug00ber, netpoet, leijaa, and so on get their last salary check from the above-mentioned organisations? oh wait, never.

i think it's amazing that TG keeps wanting to support the scene despite the continuous stream of crap people like scamp keep giving them. trying to conspiracytheory something "behind that" is a grave insult to sceners who want to provide a cool event for sceners.

oh and by nationally known events, i mean known to non-nerds. correct me if i'm wrong, but i think nearly any person under 40 in finland knows about the existence of ASM, and i guess TG is no different. typically all they know is that it's thousands of sweaty nerds in an ice hockey arena (no idea about the scene), but it's known and it's big. i guess most of bingen knows about BP. that's thousands vs millions of people right there. the "cards being played" to politicians are completely uncomparable.

skrebbel: You are right about that, I remember going to TG'97 when the border patrol in Oslo asked us where we were going. "To a computer event." we said, and he answered: "Oh, to The Gathering?" :-D

scene.org at TG. well I cant see any problems with that.. or asm.

here in Sweden we have dreamhack that for sure have fucked the scene bigtime. be happy that ASM and TG does have scene-related stuff..

hey.. today demoscene consists of people of the age of 30+ if we want the demoscene to be a very very internal thing with no new people then I can understand the fuzz, but I for sure would like to see new people doing new stuff so that's why we NEED TG, ASM etc. (and dreamhack but as they seems to just dont care they are forgotten and doomed)

i have to say that this looks like a cool place to have an award-show.
and i think that some competition for the annual--to-be-announced-demoparty-on-easter-somewhere-in-germany can't hurt either. i wish you the best for it, even when i as a german most certainly rather attend the german party. but with a proper-live-stream it should be no problem to enjoy the awards too.

How sad and dangerous is this discussion.
The only good thing is - that its obvious which sceners are really emotional bound in this whole thing - which is honourable imho.
Because for many of us scene is an unreplaceable lifestyle.

The only good thing in moving the awards to TG is to present them to a whole new audience, what could cause in getting some of the gamers there beeing more interessted in the scene.
But will the gamers stop gaming during the awards?
Do they "kill all audio and lights" during democompos?

But to be honest it is like presenting a custom-motorcycle-award-show on an agriculture-fair.
It may happen that some of the farmers like bikes afterwards, but i guess most of em stay with their tractor engines breeding pigs.

But who cares..I feel like a child who is in the middle of a divorce war of its parents.

could you please all calm down and stay objective.
this here really hurts, causes fights and im afraid that it may split the community/family.

It is very sad that scene.org didnt ask the community first what to do in the future...we could have done some voting.

From a US scener's perspective: Look, I can really only attend 1-2 parties a year, AT MOST. I've only been to 3: NVScene in '08, TG '10, and @Party '10. Now, all of these have been fantastic. Part of it may be that I don't go to many, so it's a big deal to me. Part may be the other attendees. Who the hell knows and who the hell cares.

You'll notice something here: ALL of these parties have been dry parties. NVScene had a bar a bit later, and I was offered drinks (thanks Polaris!!), but I was underage and didn't have any. STILL had a great time.

Look, this Easter, I might have enough money to get back to Europe for a party. I have one solid, for-sure choice: TG. I also have one rumored choice: the German replacement. Both would be really cool (and I'd love to see the scene.org awards), but planning this far ahead, it's looking like unless I hear something good from the German replacement (***FROM WHICH NOTHING HAS BEEN SAID***) then TG is the obvious choice. I had a great time this year and with the scene.org's and more people it will be even better.

So, I don't have any opinions for or against whether or not the awards belong at TG. And I don't really care what you think either, but this is my perspective. Or maybe someone like me from the target age group for scene expansion hasn't been around enough to have an opinion, as opposed to some old farts who hardly produce shit anyways (no pun intended).

I guess what I'm saying is, I think the alcohol debate is pure shit, but I appreciate the skepticism about the target audience. Also, what's been decided has been decided, so we won't know until Easter how it goes. I wish the TG and scene.org crews the best of luck, and I eagerly await the result. Maybe I'll see you there.

yeah, sometimes people tend to forget that everything discussed here is goodwill and voluntary work.
