I'm also confused by the tech demo's lack of tech. If this is to be "the best 2D space scrolling shooter" in any way by the end of August, I'd say you're running behind schedule. You probably need more than a few extra coders and artists.
K-man: if you're into state of the art / Cave shooters it might be old new for you but just in case, Mushihimesama Futari and Espgaluda 2 are both available on Xbox 360 (japanese version only but zone free) and Dodonpachi Resurrection will be available in November :)
There is also Deathsmiles (quite weird horizontal shooter) but not as good as their vertical ones imo.

Prince of Persia was cool almost only because of the animation. I have played many platformers and never appreciated the gameplay of PoP.
