demos ['de:mo:s] is finnish for when you start singing songs because you are wasted on beer. and cene [ke:'ne] is a big gathering that might last a few days.
so a demos-cene is a where lots of people come together for a few days to get drunk and sing songs around campfires.
BEST THREAD EVER!

Personally I think it's really sad that the first article and consecutive posts only focus on old machines, he (almost dead) history, and chipmusic.

@Gloom, yeah, i can relate to that. Though showing a bit of historic perspective does add (cultural) value. On another note it might be because it's mostly about the scene as a movement, not neccesarily the 'top-productions'. But the week has not ended yet :)

For an example of a contemporary magazine, see Hugi. Claus-Dieter Volko, the editor of Hugi, has written several articles on diskmags, which can be found online on his website [SNIP]

diskmags, the pinnacle of the demoscene! and Hugi for crying out loud! how's that for "cultural value"?
It's not a question of liking Hugi or not. It just happens to be one of the few diskmags still in existence.

Its fun to see people addressing the scene, like an extraterrestrial phenomenon.

Instead of watching this we simply prefer this.

Now the first seems to be more artistic, don't you think? ;-)

Maali just thumbs down a new Hugi issue out of habit even if most others like it and thumb it up. Let loose of the darkside Maali must ;-)

Sure, but adding it to what? As it stands now, it simply reads as "The demoscene used to copy games, but now they love 8-bit music and compressing stuff", more or less.

The introductory article is one of the better explanations of demoscene to outsiders I've seen so far.
And now I will spread the word with this awesome twitter client for C64!

It doesn’t matter how small it is, but how you use it that matters – or at least that’s what most of our girlfriends would have us believe. But the truth is, that line just about perfectly defines demoscenes – content that packs quite a visual punch in ridiculously small filesizes. Made extremely popular among geeks and gamers by the 96kB FPS called .kkrieger, the demoscene, err, scene, has expanded to lots of crazy coders trying to find more ways to pull off the gaming equivalent of squeezing Kirstie Alley into Calista Flockhart’s bikini.

Showing off the latest in the Farbrausch line – fr-041: Debris, the produkkt team showed how much DX9.0-like visual quality you can squeeze into a 177kB file. Although Debris isn’t playable, the flyby that it generates takes you on a magical carpet ride through a mindbogglingly beautiful 3D cityscape, complete with GTA IV-esque train rides and F.E.A.R.-like underground railway stations.

I didn't know visual quality is measured in DX'es.
