Are trackers used outside of scene/game music?
category: general [glöplog]
Just curious if there are any examples of professional musicians using trackers these days? Its not something I'm too familiar in, but if not - why not?
Stumbled across this old video of Vince Clarke (Erasure) using a BBC with some tracker software and midi keyboards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQthcAK9kAg. Any other cool examples floating about?

other cool examples
Erasure is not cool, Erasure is gay.
there is youtube on a video having a tracker inside by vsnares
Aphex Twin used trackers for a while
is it true that madonna still produces her songs using protracker?

Unicorns rule, bro!
If you consider Renoise a tracker in the classical sense (as opposed to a DAW with just a tracker interface), then sure.
I use old trackers in my professional work occasionally. For really high accuracy in sample manipulation sometimes a tracker is the best bet.
I have used trackers (protracker and renoise) in professional work too. Why not sticking with tools you know best?
I guess a lot of electronic music producers would admit to using trackers at some point... (Art of Fighters come to mind)
Also, Renoise has a pretty impressive artist roster.

aphex twin and venetian snares use Renoise a lot.
but i don't know if you can call that a real tracker.

Necros still uses buzz. Had lunch with him last week.
I don't understand, buzz ate food with him?
lol, buzz.
edit: wow what? NEW buzz releases? last build only a month ago? why didn't i know about this?

Umm, well @ least 1 of them was. Figure that one out all by yourself did you?
Well done!
I must admit I was never much of a Buzz-fan (used it on one or two tunes I think), but this feature (vertical waveform in pattern view) is friggin' awesome :)
cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy is a Renoise user. Apparently a large part of their upcoming album is made using it. cEvin explicitly mentions using Renoise here, but I've seen him mention it in other interviews as well.
Don't worry, you are not alone, you can keep using a tracker.
Burial uses trackers.
Are you sure?

M: Explain about the production set up you use…
B: I’m not a ‘musician,’ no training, nothing. So I was always scared of people who had studios. Heroes of mine like Photek suddenly became Rupert Parkes in his studio, telling everyone how he did it. The magic got a bit lost.
B: So I thought to myself fuckit I’m going to stick to this shitty little computer program, Soundforge. I don’t know any other programs. Once I change something, I can never un-change it. I can only see the waves. So I know when I’m happy with my drums because they look like a nice fishbone. When they look just skeletal as fuck in front of me, and so I know they’ll sound good.
M: So you don’t use a sequencer?
B: No.
M: So does that mean your drums are not necessarily in time?
B: My drums are definitely not necessarily in time. When I try and do drums that are too regimented, they lose something. But the moment I put drums where I think they sound good, rather than in time, they seem to have that roll, the swing of the jungle and garage tunes I love.
B: Some of the elements in the drums that make that swing are the ones that don’t fit in to a time signature and that are out. The little bits that are wrong. If I used a sequencer my tunes would sound rubbish.
B: Because I don’t have a sequencer I can’t really mess around. I can’t noodle, at all. I got to shove it together and vibe off it. I make the tune, fucking quick. Not a single tune on my album took more than a few days to make. They come together real quick and then I spend some time on the details so they’re alright to listen to.
M: So once a tune has been started how do you go back and change it?
B: I can’t. I can only affect it. I have to fade bits out or fade it if I don’t like it or replace it and hope it’s in time. It’s budget. It’s not perfect.
that sounds very suspicious.
Burial said that in several interviews.
I was also said Solar Fields uses a sound editing program instead of a DAW (but it's ambient).

Magnus (Solar Fields) uses Vegas.. and yeah, he mostly records his sounds then goes to work on them. I agree with Kaneel, using only Soundforge sounds suspicious.. and something one would say just to be cool :)
i once used a tracker outside of the scene!
