[Trolls stay out of this thread] New OS project
category: offtopic [glöplog]
Yo. This is to any intelligent people reading this.
Those of you who have a programming interest beyond the realm of demos may find this interesting.
It's about something that I believe will be big.
What happened before:
I have spent the last few years researching and doing preliminary work for the components of a next-generation OS.
What is happening now:
All of that is done and it's implementation time!
There's a prototype in a 0.1 version, and it's written in Java. You can play with it. Or read the sources. Or - well, you probably can't compile it yet, but that is going to change.
Wait, did I hear anyone moan when I said the J-word? Tell you what, if you don't like Java: you suck. Heh.
Anyway, I'm not too dogmatic there. I happened to choose Java for good reasons, and I like that to be respected. (God, screw the programming language wars.) The project itself is really more about the ideas than about one specific implementation.
Well then. Join the project! And tell your friends.
Cheers.
vibrator / Stefan
PS:
Fun fact - you can also make a donation! It will cost you less than a BITS demo and hey, actually, the OS is already more fun than a BITS demo.

Hold on, an OS that runs on a JVM?
I'm not sure how it could work. Maybe on ARM/Jazelle? It's quite an undertaking.

Target systems?
I suggest you take a look at http://www.osnews.com/ - where news like this go to die.
I think the idea is fantastic and I'm hoping that this project gets off the ground. :) However, there are many OS projects out there. Wouldn't you prefer to contribute to a promising existing project rather than start anew?
Tell you what, if you don't like intercal: you suck. Heh.
But i'm not going to start a language war here... just saying that that you suck if you don't like intercal...
PS:
Fun fact -
... what do you expect when posting about yet another os project without stating even the idea behind it, posting some noncompilable java sources and _asking for donations_

Oh oh,.. he asked for the trolls to stay out,.. How long can this thread survive?
Since I don't Java and don't plan to: good luck with your project.

- Move running applications from one computer to another
- Log-and-replay of everything your computer does (but only if YOU authorize this)
Why would I want to do this?
It's still March 31st in my corner of the globe. The original poster should've waited a few more hours before posting his announcement.
hey, didn't we all do something like this when we were sixteen?
vibrator, a hint: ask andrew tanenbaum what he thinks. only if he gives you an F, your project has a future.

I think I'll stick with demos for the time being, a Java-based operating system featuring replays is just too much for my sanity.
I suck !
^^ Java aint no option for an OS !
also very few use Linux already, while its for free !
they favour to pay for some really SHITTY OS instead !
( as if sth that doesnt cost couldnt be good -> western-lifestyle -> this suxx ;) )
so, sorry to say, but your OS wont success :(
PS: forgot about its april,1st ! you suck !

boring
Happy April's 1st day!
I think some commenters here need to read up on the concept of a "prototype".
That said, I'm a bit sceptical of any OS project where one of the first things to be written is a GUI.

Wake me when it has a port of Planet Hively.

I'm not sure how it could work.
Sounds like android, exept that android is not exactly a jvm, but a "dalvik vm", which means a special VM is on top of the system, and allows to share resources and libraries between tasks.
Unlike java JVMs: a jvm is thrown PER application, as different system (native system) tasks. From this point of view: an OS based on dalvik:OK, an os nased on a single jvm: NOT OK.
of fuck april 1st of course
it sounds like an examns project at a random computer science department.
taking the lamda closure of the running process and execute elsewhere is no new thought and definitly not very usefull in real life. the only use case i've seen is wm ware.

You should write it in naprola.
It would be bug-free.
java.
*posts a million pictures of java handbooks into this thread, all of which have a cup of coffee on the cover
