Stop bitching around...

category: general [glöplog]
I stopped commenting on demos when smash started coding. Up until then I could see the point of constructive criticism, but there aren't words to describe just how fucking awful things have become since "fairlight" (or whatever you want to call them) started shitting what they describe as "demos" (HAR HAR) onto our computer screens. I mean, jesus, they really fucking piss me off. I'm going to do us all a favour and kill smash. I'll probably beat him to death with reed's skull, because that's what he deserves, the fucking cunt.

Also, consider that when you make a demo, you probably shouldn't be making it to appease the whims of the approx. 1000 active nerds that hang around here.

Try impressing the deviantart crowd instead, they like their dutch colour schemes :)

Also, typing in a korean font helps, apparently.

as all societies are structured this way I can't imagine we will get rid of it. lot of people search attention by posting. they lost the normal way of getting in contact with others and try to compensate it.

i agree with sentences #2 and #3. but not with #1. all societies are different. positive societies are possible and do, indeed, exist.

on the thread topic: i recall that recently some new guys showed up and presented their firsties on pouet, and they got very favorable and encouraging responses.

whatever. pouet is a mixture of the best and the worst characters. a place for learning how to be cool in rough territory :]

day 1: post on pouet and engage in discussion
day 2: get outraged at some of the opinions posted
day 3: realize that discussing something seriously on pouet is as unlikely to happen as enjoying the feelings of nails being hammered into your dick
day 4: meh

People have serious discussions on pouet? :-)

this leads us to the question: who posted the first unreasonable thumbdown on pouet?

Personally I blame pouet for it, they could have just had piggy or thumb up if they wanted to avoid this kind of thing. Statistically you'd get the same chart results without thumb down, it's only there as a provocation tactic as far as I can tell. When Compunet first started in the mid-'80s they had a rating of 1-9 which gave the exact same results pouet has. "Oh I'm so angry at your free graphics demo that costs nothing that I'll give it a 1, I am so powerful and my opinion matters!" But, says popular thought, if there are hundreds of demos out there, how else will we tell which are good? Just bloody download them if you want, god sakes. At least now you're not waiting 30 minutes to get 64k of data onto your tapedrive are you?

Oh well I'm rambling, with no facts to back it up, the best way. Simple truth is there were demos before Compunet, demo parties, Ojuice and Pouet even existed, there'll be demos after they're all gone. While it's nice people put the effort in to organise these things they're not essential to demomaking, never have been.

There are serious discussions on pouet, when math, mandelbulbs and raymarching are involved.

I don't think anybody really cares about the flaming. If you release a demo on here, you're drawing attention to yourself from people who write flames. Most of us just have a good laugh at them :-)

Meanwhile, you can't beat a bit of constructive criticism when you're trying to work out why nobody voted for you in the compo.

"this thread sucks!" :D
while I'm in a ranty mood:

Parties where you have to be present to have your demo in the competition. wtf? How the hell does this help anybody? And they wonder why there are less demos at competitions, oh maybe it's because you have to travel 2000 fscking miles to have 100 people watch it in a hall.

yes, yes "go code a demo about it", ironically it wouldn't be released at a party would it.

The anti-youtube stuff on here is a bit weird because that's probably the place most demos are watched these days, and by people that aren't us thank god. (as nice as demoscene.tv and capped are, they're not going to reach outside of here are they? )
