Moderation!
category: general [glöplog]
since a lot of people have been complaining about bad comments, let me suggest a sort of moderation system here:
the idea is that good comments will get more respect and get more points and the bad comments will get dissin so they'll lose points (nothing would get deleted by stuff modded very low wouldn't get much read). also some information of why the comment is good or bad could be included (like: informative/flamebait/troll/lamer/etc) every user would have a threshold so that they could decide how lot of crap they wish to see.
first, we need a few respectable sceners to be in control of everything just to keep the system sane and keep the mindless trolls away.
second, because even the few real sceners that there are cannot mod all the flood we should give others a chance to moderate as well. however, we need to exclude idiots from modding randomly even the good and nice people so only people that have been behaving well should be given chance to moderate.
which leads us to the third factor, karma. sceners that have been voting fairly (been often modded up, that is) should get more "karma" which will empower them to a) get better default points b) more power to moderate others.
and fourth, some comments are intrisically crap and some kind of a lameness filter should be applied to take care of mindless yelling and other shit.
all in all, i think this would make the true scene-spirit finally come back. people would stop writing bad about top ten groups and not praise stupid lamers all the time. opinions would become coherent, no-one would ever have to read blasphemy and infidels would leave the scene.
..bit late? yeah, but i'm not in control here either to scare any of you really

yeah, we know how slashdot works. we know how censorship works and, you know, if there's a comment you don't like then you can say "that's a stupid comment because ..." in whatever terms you like. If every comment in the thread is the same then, you know, post anyway if you think you're right. pouet isn't full of mindless idiots who say "you suck" without an obvious reason, if you have a valid point you'll probably get people who disagree for reasons.
if there's idiots who just say HA HA U R WORNG¬!!!!! then perhaps they're a candidate for banning, but implementing that whole karma shit would take lots of effort for not much result.

will comments containing the word 'homo' be thumbed down?
if so i'm NOT in!

I also had this similar idea a few months ago that you could generate per user stats on what groups or specific demos they generally like / dislike / are indifferent to and then be able to have pouet.net compare all the other users in relation to yourself. It could also make suggestions on who you should hate and who are your best friends. Ofcourse you would be able to killfile all those assholes who like different things than you and then feel damn good about yourself.
You could also make very beautiful graphical representations on the relations of various groups of users on pouet. These graphics (created in a java applet on the main page) would show you the relationship of the people who like all the pointless 3d flybys versus those dadaists, potheads and artsy-fartsy types who can only become interested in all those demos that just go bonga-bonga-flash-flash or ktshhhhhhhh-gkra-hhhhh. Also lame fans of pointless done-before nu-media stuff would become very apparent.
You could then form mini-scenes by way of killfiling and everything would be perfect forever. Then you would just release prods to please those selected few who have filtered down to your preferred standards.
Great idea, eh?=D
All the sarcasm aside i'd really actually would like to see some sort of improvements on the quality of comments (impossible request, i guess) and maybe some more complex stats too. One nice extra stat would be the top 10 groups of each user (placed on their user sheets) These could be calculated like: all positive comments given to certain groups prods by user - all negative comments given to same groups prods by user / amount of prods by group the user has submitted (thumb up/down) comments to or something similar.

moderation systems don't really work. first and foremost, they favourize certain types of posts which are not always the most interesting ones, those who are 'average', 'in the mainstream'. it's too easy for moderation to be abused in a certain form of blind, responsible-less censorship, even if at first people would play the game by the rules.
moderation also favourizes 'professional' posters building fame and only serving it.
i already suggested before to give a way for people to thumb up | thumb down without actually having to comment... maybe would that reduce the number of redundant one liners in the comment areas. which are often the 'bad' posts.

yes i was thinking about this killfile feature... definitely would be appreciated from here, i'd like not to have to cope with certain people's useless and constant bashing.
a personal killfile i would manage... and perhaps a top favourite posters list where i could put people i appreciate and whose comments would be perhaps displayed on top of the comment area.

uncle-x: are you drunk or what?
Then, once you've split the scene into various groups depending on what kind of demos they're into, you can classify all the comments under various types. eg, (criticism, praise, flame), and various sub-types to do with size (small flame, lengthy praise) and create a site called "meta-pouet" where the groups can add comments.
Then people can log in, and when they read a comment they like, they can go off and write a demo about it based on how it makes them feel. :)

Nooo...
I like pouet.net. I don't like slashdot.org. No moderation, please!

Well, moderation worked more or less in old fidonet times (I was moderator in an fido echo for some time) or on demoscene networks, but not really in an open network like the internet. Maybe the ability to delete dumbass comments is a proper way (and should be done only by serious sceners)
melw: nope. but i guess 216 was:)
Odd double post there with an older version of the message being posted later. I swear i didn't do anything!:)

you drunken bastard, you! ;)
I do not think there is any problem with the current system. It's plain and simple. It's no censorship. Gee, even stupid peoples comments are very amusing to read. I would just hate any kind of censoring / moderation. Then pouet would just become a more demo review site instead of the wonderful fun to read mud place it is now :) I mean, everybody should understand how seriously to take comments on pouet, what's the problem? Too many posts? I don't think so, really.
What one could do maybe would be some per-cookie-user killfile like "do not show me any non-thumbs up comments on my own prods" and things like "do not show me any comments from user x".
But please, please, please no moderation. Thank you.

I think moderation is useless. You can't prevent people to hate your productions, that's simply impossible to please everyone, and Pouet users aren't that barbarians ;)
Now i just second PS/Calodox on these posts : popularity in demoparties is unfortunately not proportional to the talent.

moderation ? NOOOOooooooo........!
comments are the reflect of the mood and the spirit of a scener. it's simply the human spirit and nature.
scene community will self ban the true lamers, and scene community will self respect the true sceners.
if a scener is very bad, then the demoscene will kick it in the deep of silence because he suicide himself with his bads comments (no names here ;] ).
no need a moderator for that.
if you want to shut up the mouth of a particular scener, do a demo for that, like in ancient times.

or like this ! =D
better idea.. make it real forums instead of this big one table things then if someone makes a thread
"YOU SUCK" then why would anyone open that thread if you only wanna see "nice tits"? =)

for the bbs perhaps. not for the comment areas. commentaries aren't discussions.
Moderation is bad. Freedom of speech or something.
Killfiles are good since you only censor yourself.
Regardless, it would be nice to be able to filter comments a bit.
Here's an idea or two:
Show no comments on a prod page (exception below), and add 4 links - "show thumb up comments", "show neutral comments", "show thumb down comments" and "show all comments". Leave the "add a comment" box there.
However, if you view the page from the "latest comments added" box or the comments.php script, you get the "show all comments" view by default. (ie. it would look pretty much the same as it is now)
Add an average thumb rating for the prod, similar to the one in the user profile, so you still have an idea what other people think of the prod without having the comments there (or is that popularity - for some reason I think page hits might be included in that number, which is no good if you ask me).
The simplest filtering, but I think it could be nice.
I'm off topic now, aren't I.

Comments for comments!
moderation here would suck. go to bitfellas if you want forums without pouet idiocy.
I'm against these kind of filtering/moderation because they would end up splitting the scene. pouet is a place for everyone: newbies, oldschoolers, flamers, whatever.. if you want more clever posts in the end, maybe you should look towards bitfellas.
It's also unclear what's a "wise moderation", if freedom is only for you and your friends, then that's what we call a dictatorship. all these systems are biased once a pervert leader comes in control.
hope i somehow make sense. :)
