regarding the original post:

thom, chapeau :-)

i really wonder who coughed up that 9k.

or, maybe he "pledged" it to himself hoping that it would encourage others to do so too? any other conspiracy theories?

either way, i assume block party has free entrance this year!

well, being more about computer history in general than demomaking, it can kinda make sense. And making documentaries or setting up a server to host more than 10 years of web junk can also cost more money than just making demos. (so Smash's example isn't exactly fair)

And he did give a lot to the demoscene, funding many Blockparties as well as the RVscene booze-event.

But still I gotta agree with thom. If he had a good job he's got some savings. And even if we put that away, he's got some job security (or whatever you call it).

And archiving geocities... hasn't archive.org already done it?

thom is right. I went down that path before (used to live on less than social security for years although I was slaving for some company (but only 5 days a month)).
you can do a lot with $25000 bucks, at least if you really want to.

the real problem are in fact our money driven societies. shouldn't it be about people? what about old ideas like "negative income tax" ? too people-friendly ? more like "too corporate-unfriendly" I guess. forcing people to be slaves certainly makes them a lot easier to control..

on topic: if anyone gives me 250000€, I'm outta here ;) and good luck to Jason Scott (honestly).

heh, i just read the thing and thom is kinda right

i mean 25k dollars isnt a whole lot of money but i can cover my lifestyle with it for a good 6 months (including owning a 2-story house with garden) in .nl, so i don't see how one can ask for that whilst not working :)

funding many Blockparties

Well, that's a truth with a certain degree of "not exactly". As I understand it, Notacon funded most of Blockparty, including the space and such. But hey, people down on their luck is never amusing, but as Gargaj said: oh the irony.

Gloom & Gargaj: gentlemen, please. "You can't buy the demoscene"

25K dollars is like 7 euro right?

Crossproduct: to give you an idea, a guy working his ass off full time at Mc Donald's will make $16.000 a year.

I was joking, mate :)

So was I but it was a good opportunity to put things in perspective and realize even more how this whole thing is ridiculous :)

Jason Scott can't work at McDonald's! He has textfiles to archive!

It most definitely is!

I also try to save some money when working. Currently I am not working (, going to travel for 5 months in 2 weeks \ 0 /,) but it's totally on my own savings.

Still, feel free to donate... :)

Then again, the costs of hosting a site like that aren't cheap. Without donations TMA wouldn't be on-line any more, so I suppose, in his defence, if he doesn't get a job, then around 750e a year will eventually start to bite...

Fuck it, I can't justify $25,000.

Nice sociological experiment. That people actually pay other people to preserve something they deem important for society and not only for themselves. Society has come quite far.

Perhaps Jason should take textfiles.com offline for a couple of months. That would make it possible for us to estimate the value of the content we can't reach.

Have you been self-googling again? ;)

Actually, it was more along the lines of "Huh, defacto2 linked to my fundraiser. Oh, bitfellas did.... that probably means... ooooooo pouet had it show up on the front page. And this is pouet. So there's a thread."

More like that.
