oldskool - should I add this type of prod ?
category: general [glöplog]
there are some submitted prods as demos which have been released in partys in oldskool compo.
should we keep the less possible categories on pouët.net or be more precise by adding the new oldskool type demo ?
thanks for answering this poll-like thread =)
ps: I'm on the screenshot bug, don't worry your screenshots are on the server and aren't losts.

To me an oldschool demo remains a demo... What is really an oldschool demo ? The definition differs a lot depending the party where such compos are organized.
Moreover I think adding a new category of prods will just confuse people adding a prod... People may add some demos in the oldschool category just because they're old, whereas that category was not meant for that...

As exocet, I think a new 'oldschool' cathegory will cause a lot of confusion. Is 'oldschool' demos old demos, or new demos with old requirements/design?
As a nice gesture to the user of pouët.net, I mean that the person adding the prod can mention that the demo competed in the 'oldschool' democompo, and not the ordinary democompo as a comment.

Oldskool is a great idea i love the amiga stuf best kewl design nice, real nice.
I think the problem is more in the way we have to submit prods on Pouet.net !
We have to choose a category for the prod, but if the prod has been presented at a party there are probabilities that it was not presented in the correct corresponding category. One example ? Well at the Volcanic 4 I presented an Oric demo in the Wild compo. It's really a DEMO, but I registered it as a WILD.
Perhaps we should modify the registration of prods in two parts, one that describe what is the prod (is it a movie, a demo, 64k, music, whatever), and another part that describe the prod presentation in a party (category, ranking, party, date, ...).
Seems stupid ?

finch, I don't think you understood the meaning of the new cathegory analogue are thinking of implementing.
dbug, maybe not stupid, but I really don't see how that could be better than today's type/platform system.

i'm with dbug on this one
all the party-rankings which pouet automaticly get from the community submissions will look weird for some parties if two different compos are listed as one (oldshool + demo = demo)
add this to the fact that the compos are not listed by platform, hence two winners, two on 2nd place etc !and!
some demo-compos are divided into sw/hw which adds yet another demo at 1st/2nd/etc (you might want to look this up analogue) :)
i say: add an 'oldschool' description (and any other compo that have/will occour(ed) more than once)
and fix the party-rankings to sort demo/in64 compos under correct platform and if its a sw/hw only compo, that is if they're not mixing platforms like at asm2k
ok, im resting my fingers now :)

Exocet speaks good, this is not a good idea
just see the Finch answer on this question
he is confused between oldschool and Amiga :(
(perhaps he never see actual Amiga prods, Finch continue to surf pouet.net and try to see more recent Amiga prods, you will learn a lot about Amiga culture)
oldschool is too blurred definition
in five years, the today demos will be oldschool too..
so my vote go to 'NOT want this new catagory'

I think that Prodz may be submitted in their real categories and not in their party ones. And style (oldschool/newschool/....) may be left as comment.
who really cares how the production was scored? :)
Just paste the result list and link to the prods that are here.. I assume people will find out if its oldschool or not.. HOWEVER, i would like it to be possible to add MORE info about a demo/intro or whatever it is.. such as:
Win32 ?
-- Accel ?
-- Opengl?
-- Glide?
-- Direct3d (version)
etc.. altough this should be an option and can help people using the "random" button more frequent and better.

win32/accel/opengl/etc/etc. i think these options should be kept in the .nfo files which are a COOL feature of pouet.net ;-)
about the oldschool category - then i think it should be created since there _are_ parties where this is an official competition. oh yeah, and about submitting a demo in a wildcompo - that is just plain stupid!

Hey MACAW, its not my fault if at the Volcanic 4 they do not have room for 8 BIT DEMOES in their compos. I have no other choice than participate in WILD category.
So no insult please.
So no insult please.
Macaw : this is two others examples of demos wich was in wild compo :
dont forget the pre-rendered demos
it's demos, but it's mpg or avi files, so the category is wild
you see, you can found Demos in Wild part
second exemple to find demos in wild category :
i remember a demo from TRSI in the party 1994, wich was in wild compo because it's need 4Mo of Fast ram on Amiga, and the compo was limited to 2Mo fast only

Who cares about which compo category it was presented in at the party place ? What we care about is WHAT is really the release ! Organizers don’t always have enough entries to hold the competitions they wished... For instance at the Slach 3, there was a mixed intro/demo compo, so you’re gonna add the few intros released there in the demo category ? I hope you won’t... :)
And the rank field isn’t the most important feature of pouet.net. If you feel some information are missing, just add a comment...
Keep pouet.net simple ! Most people do not already fill up all the fields when adding a prod, so please don’t add new fields/categories !

what i meant with letting a production add opengl/d3d etc (if windows) was that you can config in the random what to randomize on.. so if youre on a 300mhz without 3dcard and win2k you cannot 1) watch dos demo 2) watch opengl/d3d/glide stuff .. then.. if youre on a 1ghz athlon with Geforce3 .. THEN you wont be able to watch glide demos.. and modemers dont like downloading ~10mb wich they cannot watch..
Got my point?
Got my point?
Hardware requirements should be listed in the info file, which should be included with each entry. Of course, that's a perfect world scenario, and not everybody does both.
PHOENIX: can i say i hate you? i really do.. youre fawking braindead!
about categories, if the release was done under wild-demo then the release is a wild-demo. the same goes for 64kb intros that maybe take up 200kb in the final release.
and lator, get a life.

hoho, hostile :P
Do what you want, just don't spell oldschool with a K!
