motivation vs your mother
category: general [glöplog]
I'm curious. What do you do for programming motivation? Typically I go into a food-court or a very busy place. I find listening to banging techno in my ear phones helps as well. I've been feeling as if I have no motivation as of late and I'm wondering what other people do.
so... what do you do? What helps for you?

Deadlines.
yeah, that's a big one isn't it?
I do other things until I feel motivated again.
my mother does not motivate me to code.
I imagine not, I think I phrased that to imply that your mother demotivates you to code.
... if she were to die maybe then I would feel more motivated. Psssh! no that's a crazy thought.

if she were to die you'd better stop programming and start get some of the few time left with her, trust me
yesso and preacher are both right in my case.
I think a similar thread was opened three times but it never stops to be interesting for me. Because I lacked the motivation and was obsessively trying to work on demos even if it was hardly moving. Only recently I changed my strategy which is to not work on demos if I am not motivated, to not push it too hard and take a break. It's been like this since April. I only get a little inspiration but then forget it when I watch some recent good demos.
My bad motivations were deadlines, obsession with focusing on something special, the need to fulfill the lack of my self-esteem and scene girls. Nowadays I have succubed to playing games, watching movies or porn, actually doing nothing in my life but I feel a little bit free with an eye of nostalgy looking back though and then trying to avoid it.
Is there such a thing as natural motivation for creating things like demos?

About mothers and demoscene. I just remember something. Of course my mother was against my obsession with demoscene. Oneday my parents had visited a greek demoparty (actually passed around the place to see what the hell is this demoparty thing I am into). They watched the compos. My mother later told me "You must do a demo that is better than the ASD ones!" in the same sense she tells me "You must get the best grades in the university". And I was mad of course because she wanted to get into my own world and dictate what to do there too. Haha, that's funny now I am thinking it! Does your mother visit demoparties and tell you to beat ASD? It's hilarious now I am thinking it after all these years :)

O really. Sorry for the repeat then, everyone.

Your ma told you that!? That's pretty cool.
you here that, asd. One out of one mothers agree, you must do a demo that's better then you
uhh, correct my spelling. Thanks
coding a demo in this thread.
I think at the end that she thought that if I ever made a demo that is better than ASD then I would leave my obsession to peace and get a life.

coding a demo in this thread
ok the, I'll start with the easy part:
Code:
mov ax,13h
int 10h
push a000h
pop ds

Yeah that mother-logic seems pretty sound
Also, I find it funny in that qbasic thread that someone says:
"Qbasic is just an awosme progaming langauge. I've tried to learn C++ twice the first time I just thought wow I don't think I'll ever try computer programing again. The second after I learned QB I thought wow why program in C++ when the text has to be realy neat and you have to put a stupid ; after every dang line and it takes 7 lines just to print 1 thing on the stupid screen. I just had an argument with my mom about programing in QB she says I shouldent use a programing language based on one my dad learned in 8th or 9th grade she says I should learn C++ or Perl or any other stupid new programing language but why in qbasic you can use SVGA and make it faster and all that."
I would like to meet his mother :)

Yeah me too, she sounds pretty neat.
Code:
geometry_define (g, g->flags,
g->index_n + new_indices_n, &ip,
g->vertex_n + new_vertices_n, &vp, NULL, NULL, NULL);
if (ip && vp) {
if (new_indices_n > 0) {
/* ... */
}
}
geometry_commit (g);
geometry_commit
... hmm
... hmm
taking a nap sometimes helps motivation.
reading through other peoples code can give inspiration.
other times code can be incredible boring, so finishing it can be painful.

I'm a big fan of underwear coding (tm). To go from bed to keyboard right away in the morning. Even if I don't end up writing a lot of code, I'm into the code and can think about it when I have to go do noncoding things. Also, if I get lazy in the evening :) I don't have to force myself to "at least code something" before I go to bed, so there's none of this "bah. another day without a single line of code" feeling :)
Big fan but not always following my own advice... and some days ofc it's not possible.

i can't help but be motivated and inspired when i watch my favorite demos. i've got videos of my faves on my apple tv so i can easily watch them from the couch. i can only watch so many then i have to code or draw.
drawing / sketching is another way to get motivated. you forget about everything else and let the ideas come to you and capture as many as you can onto the paper. i've been trying to spend more time with the paper than the code so that what i do code has more ideas and inspiration behind it. if you go straight to code you tend to follow a too logical progression.

maybe also an obvious thing but if you're not feeling motivated to do whatever than that thing may just not be that interesting to you. try other things until you figure out what you really love and actually do get motivated by.
