What about something like "CGTalk FXWARS" for sceners?
category: code [glöplog]
I've heard of the fast music compos and the fast modeling challenge and the daily sketch group and this display hack was the only missing piece of the puzzle, thx gloom for thinking about it!
displayhack.org was a nice suggestion, so I just registered it. Now, while I talk to some webdesigner-people, what should the guidelines be? For example, is only "native" code acceptable, or should Processing/Flash etc. be allowed? What would a good deadline be? (a week? a weekend?) etc.
shader code only :-)
a weekend sounds about just right :), at least over here.
A weekend is a good deadline. As for techniques, I'd say that pretty much anything should go. Processing is a perfect language for this kind of stuff, so it definitely should be allowed. It's extremely newbie friendly too.
Nice initiative Gloom.
The Flash dudes for example have a small code compo -> Flash #tweetcoding
Fun compo because it doesnt take so much time to come up with something crappy...hehe.

+1 gloom.
i'm in for display-hacking. we need more of this.

Domain done, but I would like some more opinions on the rules/guidelines please, so that we don't end up creating something that nobody cares to join. I am currently looking into how I can get phpBB to accept SceneID (because creating new users sort of sucks) - has anyone tried something like that before?
I love how the domain redirects here :D
Decipher: Better than this blast from the past :)
This sounds a bit like the "OpenGL challenge" which ran back in the late 90ies and which I was a frequent contributor to.
Each week there was a theme, like "Bouncy" or "Pyrotechnics" and you would code a little OpenGL effect based around that them, quite fun.

so this would compare to a gfx-compo with a theme? it could be fun!
I guess an entry would consist of 1) an executable, 2) screenshot or film, 3) some documentation of the effect and 4) source code. The last item might cause a problem, since many people typically have a medium- to large codebase upon which they would typically make an effect for a compo like this. So perhaps only the interesting part of the source would be required to submit.
I would avoid public voting, but I'm sure that's impossible to achieve. However, just for the record, I would suggest something along the lines that only contestants or contestants from earlier rounds would be able to vote. This might be a stupid idea if there's only 3 contestants, and it might make the contest less popular in general, but it will at least then be a contest where the entries are judged by "experts". Said in another way - to be able to judge an entry, it would be ideal if one is able to parse 1)-4) above, not just 1)-2).
Last words: In a perfect world, democrews would start making smaller demos and would be releasing much more frequently than they do today. That would be more fun for everyone. This is obviously impossible, so this contest could be a nice alternative. Hyden sier: Lange demoprosjekter kveler kodegleden!

so when are we having the site up and running gloom?
*looks at watch*
No, but seriously - I want to have it up quickly, if not with all features implemented already. Better to hit the ground running and pick up cool stuff on the way. I have fixed hosting now, and the next thing is to get PunBB up and running with SceneID-login, which Gargaj said he would take a look at. Once that is done, we can have a rudimentary framework up, and get things going.
However, I am more concerned with making sure that the rules are good for many people, so please continue discussing things like what should be allowed, how voting should be implemented etc.

gloom, about user ids, maybe you can use one of those phpbb openid plugins ? ;)
gloom django + web 3.0 please :P
I demand Gravatar-support!
i demand procedural-avatar support!
why not doing it at parties?
Well, because:
1) At parties, people are busy
2) The whole point is to have something to do between parties

excellent news, I guess the domain is in good hands with you !
(thought about registering for years now but never did because I know I would
not have the time to run an actual community)
about languages allowed: I think everything should be allowed: .exe, java, c#, d, flash, processing, python, ...
about features allowed: NO MUSIC (this would distract from the actual effect!).
links to pouet prods should be possible, like "this effect has been used in this or that demo" to give people an impression of what can be done with an effect if it is put into "context" (music, graphics, direction, ..).
a proper forum is also very important.

something like www.projecteuler.net would be nice
sounds fun! small issue with the weekend timeline is timezones... maybe a longer time period of a week would be better. otherwise the compo will start friday while i'm at work then end sunday morning. how can us north americans be expected to do a competing sinus scroller under those time pressures and going up against competitors with essentially and extra two days?! :P
different time obligations for different timezones? then we can have a final showdown :). also, move to europe dammit!
Sdw:
yes, i remember that. and that was actually what i was thinking of would be cool for this thing, but with some stricter rules perhaps.
gloom:
maybe im just getting bored of just punching in glEnable(GL_FOG) instead of coding an own zbuffer-fog routine or whatever.
Preacher:
Not everyone have shader 3.0.
and was trying to say something about it in my last post but anyway.

Shader 3.0 is like software rendering anyway.
