A mate of mine went into politics and his past is very colourful and even now as a councilor he's still into stupid shit. He knows he can't get too high up the food chain as if he did people will start digging for shit to throw at him in the press.

Well, of course if you're a publicly known person, people will try to find out embarrassing facts about your past and use them in order to put pressure on you. It's possible to find something more or less embarrassing about each and every person. It's unavoidable. You must be stable enough not to let it take you down. Even Bill Clinton survived Lewinskygate.
