Interesting that someone noticed my talk, how on earth did that happen?
I think it's the first time anyone's really talked about the demoscene in Ireland, in a long time at the least.
I wasn't sure whether to post about here or not, because I felt a bit under-qualified even giving it. Some people here might be offended that someone who is barely in the demoscene dares to give a talk about it! Well fuck them :)
I tried to give a general introduction and overview of the demoscene. A few people in the audience had experience of demos, and one guy had once been slightly associated with the C64 scene (in the US, I think). Quite a mixed crowd, some techy, some people who just came to the conference to see what was happening. There was a speaker from Microsoft, Havok, a few industry people and some open-source folk and I think Randall Munroe from XKCD!
I talked about cracktros leading to intros and demos, demoparties, groups, compos, all the things we take for granted. As I went through I showed a number of demos, alas not in full (except for the last).
I showed Fiat Homo by Traction, since I thought it was a good representative demo, with good music, interesting graphics and some sort of narrative. Also, it's one of my favourites.
I showed a few snippets from Second Reality by Future Crew, due to its seminal nature and the fact that it shows some of the classic effects.
Next up was Robot Warrior by PWP, as an example of a more tongue-in-cheek demo, and of amazing use of retro hardware. The crowd really liked this one.
Finally, I showed Debris by Farbrausch, to really drive home the message that demos are something special. People were very impressed by this one, as usual, and asked lots of questions about how it could be done, what it was programmed in and so on.
I also mentioned what seems to have been a small C64-based demoscene in Cork, Ireland in the 1980s. A few demos came out with Irish-related texts and so on. One of the authors is now a well-known Irish blogger, so I am going to contact him about it.
Finally, I asked whether there would be any interest in an Irish demoscene event, and the questions and comments afterwards seemed to suggest that there would be. What we came up with was incorporating a demo aspect into the next of these conferences, a demo competition at the minimum and possibly much more. Through this and other means (online community, IRC, web, pub-meets) a community could be built and grown to the point where an Irish demoparty could be a reality.
I think my friend Dave, who organised the conference, plans to put the slides up online soon enough, so they will be available. More worryingly, the talks were all filmed, so you may be able to see me speaking! We'll see what happens.

As for Breakpoint, I am not sure if I am coming... I still haven't been paid for a job I've been working at for 6 weeks now. If the money comes through soon, and the flights haven't got too expensive by then, I will. I'm also hoping to go to Sundown and AltParty this year.
I'm telling myself that I'll bring a demo this year to at least one of those parties, but I don't think it'll be Breakpoint...

Sounds like a nice talk! It looks like it wasn't recorded, right? :-) Looks like it was a nice audience to give a demoscene talk to.
I live in Dublin, so I have the best choice of flights in the country.

there were some amiga meetings in ireland at some point. early nineties, mostly focused around the quadriga group. read their intros scrollers and their diskmags for more info, or ask dad1916.
other than that i remember talking with mosh / fsk on irc, who was irish living in finland but then moved back afaik. and also rc55 ofcourse.
