My views are pretty much the same as rainmaker's. Paying should be always optional. Art should be inherently collaborative and "open source".
gloom: you are totally ignoring the fact that traditional promotion (tv/radio commercials, stars in tv shows, etc...) doesn't work well anymore : communities, buzz and 'piracy' are the new way of promotion above all else.
thec: I'm loving Spotify as well. I hope they manage to find some revenue-streams though, so that the service can be kept alive. Their free "ad-supported" version doesn't have any advertisements (not a lot, anyway) and radio ads are dead, so.. I root for them. :)
aftu: Actually, that's exactly what I was saying.. Oh, and welcome back Zest.

back in the days were there was no music industry there were also artists.
the industry is getting more and more obsolete these days, with the rise of alternative distribution methods.
and by ignoring new technologies and sueing everyones ass off they dig their own grave.

just my 2ct
gloom: i haven't ever heard any radio-ad on spotify (and I have it on all day), but I get many banner ads on the program itself (which is ok since I have it minimized all the time).
However, many (actually all, but I added new ones) of the albums I had on my playlists have dissapeared in the last days... I'm not sure the service will be able to last long (I hope I'm wrong though).

v3nomsoup: well summed up.
though "back in the days" huge artists were sponsored by rich elites.
it's a new era for artists and arts, tools have never been that democratized, now masses can pretend to be artists too and there will be fewer overpaid superstars, it matches the end of a certain economic madness.
for example has U2 deserved to become multimillionaire ? ok they are (were) good but rationally not that much compared to many local rock bands...
like many people i've decided to support local scenes and web artists, directly ; merchants can go back to selling cans and tins :)

Considering that obeying the law is generally optional that might be difficult task to accomplish.
many laws are obsolete and distorted compared to real life practice.

The BBC reports that Swedish prosecutors have dropped some of the copyright charges against founders of the file-sharing site Pirate Bay. The charge of “assisting copyright infringement” was dropped, leaving the four defendants — Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde, Fredrik Neij and Carl Lundstrom — to face a lesser charge of “assisting making available copyright material,” according to the article.

Valve is smart :)

Last weekend, Valve decided to do an experiment with Left 4 Dead. Last weekend's sale resulted in a 3000% increase over relatively flat numbers. It sold more last weekend than when it launched the game.
Valve is smart :)
an experiment being...? releasing the goddamn game on time? :)
Half price in that weekend. (And it's fun and worth the money at half price, but not full).
It's interesting to know that they made 15% percent more money selling games at 25% the price.
Nothing beats a quality original.
xernobyl: games are usually too expensive at their launch date but to be honest that Valve experiment doesn't mean that games should be always at that lower price, the reason of this sales increase is mostly psychological : it's because people feel it was a bargain compared to the original price and specially for such a renowned game which has already become part of geek culture (like half-life, portal or tf2...)
My sister is quite pro-anti piracy. At the same time she is pro-liberal economy. Is it just me, or is making money out of a 10+ year old product what these pro-liberal economy fanatics are against?
wtf stefan you got siblings?
and can they contradict themselves 6x in the same sentence too?
